The centre of the universe is one of the most desolate places human beings could possibly imagine. There is simply nothing. The temperatures are as close to absolute zero as possible. Any creature would turn into a living icicle in an instant, if the sudden depressurization did not kill them. The only light in this area is that of the distant stars. If they were not around, I would not be able to see my hand in front of my face.

Soon, however, this will not matter.

Time has simply ceased to exist. Nothing has moved for millennia. The stars do not flicker, but simply emit an endless, unmoving white light. If I could, I would reach out and touch them, just to know what it feels like to touch a star at the end of the universe. Without time, I cannot move. Nothing can. Already, the universe has begun to die out, to cease its known existence. Humanity had theorized about what would happen at the end of the universe, but they are long gone anyway. I am the only one left.

Then it starts, as if on the command of a deity’s fingers, everything moves. I can feel the force of gravity pulling everything toward me, gravitons in every particle acting to move the magnificent object known as the universe. Light starts to turn a blue colour, every single point of light turning blue on its journey inwards. The Doppler Effect is quite magnificent when you get to see it in such real time, turning the stars into a brilliant mix of blues and violets, sparkling along their way. The entire area starts to heat up as the orbs of burning gases get closer, dark matter crunching on itself, the friction creating almost unbearable heat. The stars get closer and I can feel the licks of flame almost touching my face, if they could ever do such a thing now. Then, time starts to reverse. I can see black holes spitting out the matter of stars as time reverses, stars being reborn from the guts of the invisible singularities as the gravity wells themselves recollect from an explosion and materialize into a star, newly born. My eyes watch as everything undoes itself. Stars spin out into disks of matter, and then turn to brilliant nebulae, varied in colour. Brilliant reds and blues and violets and greens, clouds of gaseous stellar dust illuminated by the stars behind it, giving off some of the most magnificent colours ever imagined by man. Galaxies fall apart into clouds of dust, the few lackluster stars lighting up the gases only briefly before succumbing to the effects of anti-time and turning to gas themselves. Then, only gases surround and race toward me, heating up along the way without igniting. The heat makes the nebulae brighter and brighter, bringing them to the brink of ignition, until the light is so intense that I can see no more. Then, the light shrinks. The entire universe collapses, particles and anti-particles annihilating one another into non-existence upon colliding. Things simply vanish altogether until the only thing left is a single orb of light, sitting in the palm of my hand. To me, it has been less than an instant since the creation of the universe, and already it has returned to that state: a single star, shining in its glorious perfection. A simple nothingness remains besides this star. No light or darkness, nor space or time exists any longer. Outside of the universe is the only thing that humankind could never imagine, as it is simply nothing.

The star in my hand pulsates, waiting for release, waiting to be reborn as a new universe, a new set of creation. I close my hand around the star and snuff out the only light in the outside, the only light the infant universe emits.

And then there was none.

(critique is welcome! smiley )
