Need Help With Photoshop Elements Please

I have photoshop elements 6.0 preinstalled on my computer but it cant seem to figure out how to use the type tool. When i click on the icon, click where i want to type then actually type on my keyboard nothing happens. Can anybody give me any insight to what i may be doing wrong.
