I saw a post somewhere in here that said I moderated the www section. This may have been true years ago, but I pretty much gave up last year. I’ve logged on like 5 times over the past 6 months. Why you ask? Because of gems like this:

i literally deleted a hundred or more two-word gibberish posts at the end of the threads yesterday. I dunno WTF is wrong with those people. The biggest hobby of the trolls seems to be threadomancing stuff from 4 or 5 years ago. I just gave up. I’m not sure if it’s drama from the lounge that spills over, or a disgruntled user who didn’t get his question answered or something. It’s really frustrating because it’s IP addresses from all over the world, and they never say why they do this stuff. It just wastes your time mopping up (98% of what I do) vs. answering intelligent questions and trying to help.
in http://www.moviecodec.com/forum4p1.html most posts are answered by people that say use “product xyz”, ironically most are commercial and you have to pay (a lot ironically are some of the products sponsored by the site). I haven’t taken a stance on this because Bjarne never gave clear guidelines (if i had it my way they’d have been gone ages ago).

I used to move all the “spam-looking” posts to the “guides” section in the hope of mopping them all up one day in one sitting. I’m still confused as to how Bjarne sees them. On one hand they promote products eerily similar to the ones that sponsor the site, on the other the posters are annoying and not really helping people with questions. Their technical knowledge is minimal (they’re salespeople, the annoying kind), and all they know how to do is their sales pitch. If the program breaks down I doubt they’d be of much help. Ironically most have female english names (as if females in the west were really video encoding enthusiasts). I would speculate most are from china though.
I also said this years back, but it probably went unnoticed. I think the www section is crumbling under its own weight. There’s too many pointless posts, more clueless posts, and trolling. There’s way too many threads with the same unanswered questions (spanning hundreds of posts) that keep growing (movie maker codec, quicktime codecs for winavi, cd images etc...). They generate the bulk of the traffic (because of the way google channels hits onto this site) and are useless as they provide no answer to people that seek them (it’s not a service to people if they have to sift through hundreds of posts without ever finding an answer). And did I mention they keep growing and getting bumped?
Anyway I thought the site should start from scratch, or at least become archived (like keep only good posts, which would be less that 5% of what’s there right now). I think too much attachment to the site makes it a nuisance and a time waster rather than help for answer seekers.
It was kinda like that 3 years ago whan I was alway posting on there Anon.
Its just the nature of the beast. Everyone wants a quick fix and nobody wants to read a few pages to get the answer.
Back in the day, i spent heaps of time on gthere with tuscan answering codec qestione before I even registered and what you described happened all the time.
MVC codecs section gets a fair bit of mention on the internet..i’ve read new posts from people on download sites and the the liek saying that they should co to movie codec for answers or downloads cause it helped them., but you will never change the results driven nature of people who just want an instant answer..
Archiving may work, but its still going to have people creating new threads to ask a question that has been answered and archived already.

I’m sorry to hear you have disagreements with the wolf (winston?) I can’t even comment on this because I know nothing about the grievance. But such is the nature of social interactions (do you know of any social network where everyone agrees with everyone else?) It’s also one of the reasons why I don’t think I could keep up with the lounge.
I guess when I started the thread it was mostly to 1) rant, and 2) find out if posts like this

were motivated by personal vendettas or something. It’d bring me some comfort at least knowing motives (even if I can’t stop it). (As if someone would step up and say “I did it! it was me all the time, all these years!".

There are a few programmers over on the Lounge side of things Anonymous. Take me for example, I’m a Senior Computer Science major at a local college. I can program fairly well and know my way around C++, Java and a WEEE bit of CSS.
