Bjarne, you ever thought of giving some of the admins the power to give out name changes? Since you aren’t here most of the time, it could help things out a bit. Just my two cents there.

That’s not what I’ll do. What I’ll do is to allow members to rename their own accounts soon. I hope to be able to enable this soon.

I need to to determine some requirements, ie. should the users have a min. amount of posts?

Also there will be a time limit, ie. no more than 1 rename per 2 ot 3 months.

In my opinion, it should be 1 rename every 2 to three months.

If users can rename their own accounts, there’ed be no need to take up admins time. I spent way to much time renameming accounts, and I’m sure the admins would get tired of it as well :-)

I do intend on doing something that allows you to see the previous name(s) of any given account. Renaming accounts is not a way to gain anonymity.

I’d like to point out the fact of some people using those horribly long and insulting names; things like that would be nice to change. (Not minding an option such as this could lead to people changing their names to something very inappropriate to begin with)
Also, it becomes a matter of completely losing track of who is who after enough people change their names.

EDIT: Suppose answer to the latter is solved.
Would also like to say that I strongly doubt that name-change requests would be much of a problem for most of the administrators. We know where priorities are, but we also have bits of spare time on our hands and would likely be glad to take loads off you.

Well, you just tore my idea to shreds and threw it into the flames, haha.

I like the idea. Although, I’d give it 4 months max IMO.

Made a “small” edit. Sorry for putting it in too late.

Perhaps a “cross” between these ideas:

Only allow users to change their own name once every 6 months (this should/ought take care of most rename requests)

But also allow admins to reset/rename insulting names (rather than just banning them outright whenever)

?
