Dude, it was Super Mario Bros. that saved the gaming industry, not Super Mario 64, although it’s still a very good game. And yes, good software DOES sell the console, it’s the most important thing. Why do you think the DS beat PSP so badly? It’s because while Sony was focusing on multimedia features Nintendo was focusing on innovative and fun software. Same concept with PS3 and Wii, which would explain why Wii is starting to outsell PS3 pretty badly.

I don’t think P. Moore understands, this was back in the 64 bit era, where 3d models were a thing unheard of and all games were side scrollers. This is literally one of the FIRST 3d games on a console, which is what made it so damn impressive. Along with the fact that the gameplay is amazing (minus the glitches people have found)

Let me rephrase that. First 2d game turn into a 3D game. It was criticized like crazy by people who couldn’t imagine a Mario game not in 2D.
