Bioshock is amazing. It’s a first person shooter set in an underwater utopia gone to hell (all I’m saying on the plot - no spoilers from me [only wikipedia]). You are able to get upgradeable weapons, genetically engineered attacks (spontaneous combustions FTW) and special abilities (invisibility also FTW) and yes, a wrench. The purpose of the “robots” is explained later in the game, though they’re actually guys in suits. It has an in depth storyline in which consistant moral decisions ultimately lead to the final outcome. You slowly learn of the city’s demise through the collection of audio journals scattered throughout the game.
I would highly reccomend buying it, playing it several times and drooling for the sequal like myself. Enjoy!
