How to play .dem files from Counter strike source

ya just like I thought .. the link didn’t work but anyway, the FAQ only covers some things. Looks to me though like you have the location of your game put in wrong and so you get an error.

Make sure your address looks like this:

DIR:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\YOUREMAIL@EMAILADDRESS.COM\half-life\

FILE:
hl.exe

Then what ever .dem file you want to play for ANY Half-Life mod will work. Be it CS, NS, DoD, TFC, bla bla bla .. you get the point.

The reason u cant play dem files w/ like windows media or quicktime is because a dem file isnt a movie really. its a video that DEPENDS on counter strike to display it self, it uses the half life engine to playback a recorded thing, and is dependent on that engine to run. that is why u must type viewdemo demoname.dem in console to watch a demo, then type startmovie moviename 30 in console while viewing the demo. this will start to lag like a bitch, and what its doing is taking 30 screen shots a second of the demo. these screens are saved to the same folder as the demo. then u render these screens using fraps or videomach into an avi.

There;s a program that allows you to view/edit DEM files for counter strike source.
Its called rewelator or rawelator, Google it and im sure you’ll find it.

demofreak is better than demoplayer

People are just making things unnecessarily hard on themselves and I don’t think they read everything.

.dem files aren’t video files, they are simple a list of locations/coordinates, then when you plkay them back, the game simply redenders them again to make it look identical to when it was recorded....

that’s why the files are so small, otherwise a 2min demo at that quality would be like 20 MB, instead of 700 KB

ok just came back... i record myself playing in counter-strike by typing record exp1 in console or somethin like that.... then when im done i type play exp1 in console and set fraps to record... if u get the full version of fraps you are not getting fucked by 30fps all the way around i have high quality demos on cs flicks by only using fraps and sony vegas 4.0

i got demofreak and got it to launch but i get errors saying missing vgui files any got any ideas?

You could also just record .dem files.
Then when u play your .dem files (using the playdemo-command) u can start FRAPS and record your demo again.

In this way the low fps caused by FRAPS wont affect your game and you get yout demo out.

ne1 knows how 2record our game while we are playing...

thats an easy question, type in ur console

record untitled

replace untitled with wut ever name u want, to stop the demo, simply type stop in the console.

to view the demo, type playdemo (i think, if not try demoplay viewdemo or demoview. Definatly one of those) when u want to end the demo just disconnect

if the demo is jerky which sumtimes it maybe, type in the console cl_smooth 1 that usually fixes the problem.

In DoD Source the command to bring up a nice ui is “demoui” It has a built in editor to add effects etc. Check and see if it works for cs:s

To record a video while playing Type “Record "
To stop record just type “Stop”
To play u’ve 2 leave the game ( go t css main menu) & Type in console “Timedemo ".

You need to put ur .dem file in ur css directory, C:/Programm files/valve/steam/steam apps/YOU STEAM ACCOUNT/Cs:s/cstrike i think thats the path of .dem files

Note: Type commands without "" and the file name without .dem.
