How to play .dem files from Counter strike source

To record a video while playing Type “Record File name”
To stop record just type “Stop”
To play u’ve 2 leave the game ( go t css main menu) & Type in console “Timedemo file name”.

ok im new to this to source (play a lot of 1.6) but i know a lot bout movie making. type play demoname then, once u get to the right spot, type in startmovie clip1 avi(or mpeg) w/e u want, this will make a video file out of your dem file.


Also if you are doing this in 1.6 pause movie when u want...type in startmovie clip1 120.....That will take 120 bitmapp photos every second of video....Dont worry it doesnt take up a lot of space. Then u get a program called videomach. http://gromada.com/dl/videomach-3.5.2.exe


Download the program. Then load all the bitmap files in order into videomach. Click save as avi and it will mold all the pics back into a video cept no sound.


PS last words...never use fraps in counterstrike...as someone said. Its terrible quality, aint free, and it lags. Always use record, playdemo,and startmovie.

i did what you told me to do. except i typed in “moviestart MOVIENAME” because when i tried your command, it did not work.

CS spits out “Movie Recording” or something.

however, when i stop the movie recording and go back to my cs directory, there are no screenshots.

i got demo freak cuz i was having the same prob as everyone else, i cant get my source demos to play anywhere else cept in source. i want to be able to edit and fastforward and stuff like that. the error i recieve when using demofreak says ERROR: File is not a valid demofile, missing magic. what the hell does missing magic mean? can someone please help me get this to work

Make sure the recorded demo is in the following folder:

HDD/Programfiles/Steam/Steamapps/<yoursteamname>/Counterstrike/Cstrike

Then Go into Either 1.6 or CSS and type playdemo <demoname>

I have no clue how to use a 3rd party player, can only Use CSS/CS at the moment :/

OK i am having a problem with playing .dem files.... is there a way that i can play them without being in cs source... like a program that will open them from my c drive? i Got this program called Geekplay and someone said it was only for half-life, but it plays .dem files. I dont see why the game would make a difference... anyways i go to play it and it says the system cannot find the path specified.

i have download FRAPS but when i do every thing and the CLIPS came where i have choose to keep a VEDIO so i PLAY so no VEDIO is coming but only SOUND is coming WHY

thats not the point, for me i wanna upload it like on youtube, etc. but i cant upload a .dem so i wanna convert it to something i can upload like .avi

The Fraps makes very big files (1,5 minutes = 300-400 mb), and in half size, the video is going to sh*t graphic...so use “startmovie filename” (in the end of demo > stopmovie) it’s convert your demo to bmp file format, and you can convert it with the VideoMach to avi, after these steps edit with Vegas. HF.

The advantage of a dem file is that you can zoom around and get different shots of world views and get all the views of the different players. So if you think someone is hacking, you check out the demo with the command r_drawothermodels 2.

It also does lag the shit out of your game.
