GDC 2008: Pay to Play Your Wii
Nintendo announces a mysterious new service.
by Daemon Hatfield
February 22, 2008 - During a Game Developers Conference session called “Planning the Wii Menu” today, Nintendo’s Takashi Aoyama announced a new Pay to Play program. This will be a new version of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (NWFC). Aoyama explained that NWFC will remain a free service, but forthcoming experiences will require users to pay a fee to enjoy. These services will fall under the new NWFC: Pay to Play program. Games that utilize the new service will feature a logo similar to the one used for NWFC but is orange and reads Pay to Play at the bottom.
Unfortunately, Aoyama did not go into details about what games or services we will be paying to play. He did say Nintendo is taking steps to ensure consumers don’t mistakenly buy a Pay to Play game with the expectation that they will be able to access the entire game for no extra charge.
Perhaps nintendo is trying to up the anty with this newest droplet of info. Maybe they will be charging for a more “XBLesque” experience that won’t be using FCs and will have the Voice Chat capabilities that so many of us are wanting! However it goes down; I think that this is a nice bit of info to keep the saliva flowing for all you overzealous wii fans... at least there’s hope for the online from nintendo to get better, cause' right now it is ballz!
At first when i read this i was hapopy as fuck but then i realized something...Pay to Play.
what if they charge us money to play online and all they did was add mics and tehy still kept FC’s? I mean Wii online with mics wouldn’t change it’s position in online...it’d still be in last. PSN would still be better and of course XBL still would. So basically if they only add mics we’d be paying for the worst online service. That’d be the biggest rip-off ever.
But if they add all the features XBL has (as Unit said) and charge then it’d be worth the money. It might even be better than XBL.
Only prblm with this is that i remember reading in a magazine that a Ninty rep said that FC’s were “here to stay”. I fear that Wii online may only add mics and force us to pay . If that happened i’d just not play Wii online. I mean who would pay money for the console that has the worst online when you have another console(s) that has better online?
I just hope Ninty doesn’t chharge us just becuase they added mics. If they do...then it’ll be a big rip-off and i’ll just not pay. I mean i have XBL and PSN...if Wii online only adds mics it’ll still have the worse online so i’ll be fine playing PSN and XBL where i actually get good online. I mean i pay for XBL becuase it is the best online compared to the other 2 consoles. If it were the worst i wouldn’t pay at all.
Imo this is either a really good sign for Wii online...or a rlly bad sign for Wii online’s future.
They woudl have to do somthing different that all people could live with, like I said before have people just as friends for gaming but if they use the FCs then make it so that those are reserved for more in depth info on each other like each others friends lists, etc.
lol ya i wouldnt either, its just going to be a hassle getting the money for both that and XBL... but at least ill have a job b then, so i guess it isnt all bad...
The pay to play would only be for some games, and I’m pretty sure they’d only charge it for one with extensive features. Possibly an MMO. Thing that comes to mind would be the next Animal Crossing game, which is in short something like an MMO.
But everything else about it is really just stating DLC is coming. As for mic support, this has already been confirmed numerous times that internally a mic is being worked on.

I think there is a good possibility that this could be one of those things that push nintendo to come out with an HDD for the wii sooner rather than later. It could also be used for Spore in some way, which would come as no surprise to me.
