With all the weird news going around these past few months (Blizzard speaking of monetizing Battle.net, Infinity Ward removing dedicated servers from PC Modern Warfare 2), it wouldn’t surprise me if Microsoft did increase the price of Live sometime. It may not last if there was enough people that would drop the service so as to lose them money on it. And, something tells me that’s unlikely. Live has become so integral a part of millions of gamers' experiences, that I doubt they’d be willing to part, and would accept some bullshit rationalizing of the whole deal. Who knows, maybe Microsoft has been spilling the beans of this idea to investors, and this analyst got word of it? You never know.
Hopefully it doesn’t happen. Hopefully, some sort of epiphany does happen to them and they remove the bullshit Live business plan altogether. I know it works, but seriously, why do I have to pay more than $60 to get the full gameplay experience? It’s one thing for something like WoW, which not only has a ton of massive servers they have to run, but many smaller servers for instances people do outside the main world, it’s another to charge people to essentially use their Xbox as server or tracker.
I mean, why not make the optional shit I don’t really want the only shit I’m paying for? Why not just give rewards and insider shit to the ones that pay? Instead, let everyone play online for free, get the extra stuff for a price if they want it. No, instead, I have to pay for all that optional shit just to play online. It’s like DLC that unlocks data on a disc you already bought. It was already there and perfectly usable, but you can’t access it until you fork over more money; “You bought only some of the disc, there’s still more we can charge you for though."
Good business is so damn dirty sometimes, and it only flies because of the morons that follow it. I just love online gaming so much I feel I have to pay the price. Although, I wouldn’t be so uninterested in buying all my cross-platform online games and switching to the PS3. Shit, it’s seeming like a MUCH better deal than the 360 now that it’s $300 and just has more with it. There’s literally nothing on Live I would miss, except for maybe the Guild, which I can watch the Web anyway.

Misleading thread name. This is a video game analyst, Michael Pachter, who is predicting that they will probably raise the price. MS responded with a half denial kinda thing but right now nothing like this is going to happen.
Thank you, Zucas.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone with a brain to come in here and put this to rest.
Well it’s why I’m here. Make sure people get the whole story and not half truths and whole lies. No need to have our site become a fox news show eh.
Just we do need to know about this that MS did openly deny it but sort of a half denial as they said they have nothing like this happening in the coming months while Pachter was talking about coming years. Thus why I said it was a half denial.
Personally I would think MS would be looking to make it cheaper if not free... but that will depend on how much competition Sony and Nintendo give it next generation because this generation that competition has been fairly low. Thus it gave MS the appeal of paying for the better service while they got the appeal of “well it’s free”.

If xbox increases their online play price up (there shouldn\'t even be an online fee) and with ps3\'s price drop, free online, blue-ray and huge GB hard-drive. Xbox wouldn\'t have a chance, I doubt xbox is stupid enough to do that. They are already stepping in their grave as we speak, digging deeper.. well good luck with that.
They have the best chance. They add more and more stuff, and will be able to compete with cloud gaming. Microsoft can finally get the money to then turn around and develop serious dedicated online PC games.
As for PSN, it sells at a loss.
Look at the Wii Online, Nintendo is not doing so good now is it?
Yes clearly that makes sense...
Xbox raises online fee to $100/ year vs Ps3’s Free online?
Xbox has roughly the same games as Ps3
Ps3 has A LOT more features then Xbox (blue-ray, HDD, more storage space, looks nicer) for same price?
But some how.. all of this is going to get the Xbox to have “the best chance” of out selling Sony? You got to be smoking something good bro, either that or you are a die hard Microsoft fan boy.
i don’t think they’ll ever make live free... well, not during this gen of consoles. there will be a lot of pissed of consumers who’s been paying for years already.

Excuse me?

MSFT raising it to $100- I might still pay for this, but then they better seriously start making Live worth it.
I like the jab at cloud gaming, but how could Msft turn Live into a Cloud system as it is?
PSN does not really compare , so it is feasable. It is not a suprise though. Msft has a tendency to make you pay and such.

That’s the last thing they’d consider. They started it with people having to pay, but realized they could keep on going.
And PSN is pretty comparable to Live. Sure, Live is more streamlined, but PSN is still free and features much of the same functionality. And above all else, it plays games free. That’s what most people are paying for, I don’t see why Live is worth more money.
I digress.
Again, they will probably raise the price. Their “half-denial” is basically saying, yeah, we’ve thought about it, but won’t do it right now. Maybe in the future, maybe not. We’ll see.
But it’s Microsoft. They’d be the first to charge people for pressing so many keys on the keyboard if people became stupid enough to believe that.
