Those fuckers... Say good bye to modding mapmaking tools and say hello to pay-to-play mappacks
Trying to make the PC emulate the console multiplayer network is like if Usain Bolt were to cut off one of his legs so he could compete in the paralympics.
I think this guy had it right:
“My hunch is that they’re trying to force PC sales low, to convince the PC advocates in their organization to remove more focus from the PC platform. Sure, they may have some business model with their IW-net or whatever they’re calling it, but I truly think that my hunch, though devious, makes perfect sense and unfortunately is a rational business choice, since consoles are where the money is.” - baddox

Ah that sucks but I can definitely understand why they would do that. Lose millions upon millions on potential sales thanks to hacks and mods... having dedicated serves is just a part of that. I’m sure they are either trying to limit piracy (or at least for the benefit of online play) or simply limit PC sales in general.

No, piracy isn’t really an issue. Call of Duty has always had the allure of multiplayer behind it, even before it’s console rampage that put it up with the ranks of Halo and Gears of War.
On the PC you couldn’t pirate the game and play online. It wouldn’t let you. The way it was setup prevented it (CD-keys had to be authenticated by Punkbuster, and if any duplicates were found, it would kick the duplicate). So, this makes NO SENSE as a pirating measure, and it wasn’t even their excuse to begin with. Their excuse was to create an easy matchmaking framework on PC.
All this is doing is screwing over the community that built the game up to what it is today. Which, isn’t a bad thing from a business standpoint really, since their console sales will outperform the PC (partly just because there are 2 consoles with the game).
Unless they’re worried about losing $1 million or so (which I doubt), then they’ll probably rescind this. Otherwise, the PC community will die off. There is no reason to upgrade your computer to play a game that is now $10 more and gimped. Expect Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2 to experience an increase in average players overall.

This may or may not do anything, but I recommend people trying. *sigh* I’m gonna miss this series.
