So do you need friend codes to battle other people? Is there no option for a random battle of someone like Mario kart DS?

Well you dont need a friend code for the GTS. I think theirs other options to battle online instead of something random. Im not so far in the game I got 6 badges so far and some of my pokemon are a bit under leveled. Ill add you to my friend list.
