A 9.9!!! I have to get it now! Oh, wait.......no.....no I don’t.......I have a PS2 and I would never buy a game like GTA. What do you do in all the GTAs? SHOOT PEOPLE! It never changes. I would get Ratchet and Clank before I buy GTA.

Nintendo’s Innovation Challenge at GDC
March 23, 2006

I’ve just walked out of the annual Nintendo keynote held at the GDC in San Jose, and I’m a happy individual indeed. Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata took the stage in front of 3,000 developers and press members and delivered a speech that detailed just how important innovation, change and disruption can be for the industry. The biggest news to come out of the session was the unveiling of the new DS game The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass which briefly teased the audience via a slick movie (see the full movie right here). Other highlights included the announcement that the Nintendo Revolution will be supporting over 1,000 games from the Sega Genesis and NEC/Hudson TurboGrafx back catalog. But the main focus of the session saw Iwata challenging game developers to create bold new game products.

Since the launch of the Nintendo DS, the company has successfully managed to “disrupt” the game industry by releasing a product that is very different from any other console currently available. With over 6 million copies of Nintendogs sold worldwide, the DS hardware has enjoyed a faster growth in a shorter space of time than the PlayStation 2 and GBA. Iwata attributed this success to the hardware feature (touch screen and microphone etc.) and the innovative software being made and released for the system.

He talked specifically about success of the Brain Training series of games (the first of which is coming to the U.S. in the form of Brain Age) which has captured a brand new demographic of gamers in Japan. There are currently three games available in Japan, and each release is out-selling the previous one. To date, well over 5 million copies of the series as a whole have been sold abroad. Iwata stated that the development process for the series was very different from traditional game development, and the content has a broader appeal for a variety of previously non-gaming people.

By believing that people wanted something new and different to play and by actually making non-gamers sit down and play the game, it became apparent that disrupting the typical methods of game development and publishing paid off and tapped into a whole new market of consumers. Iwata’s enduring theme was to challenge game designers to create new methods of game creation, leading to innovation and broader demographic appeal.

The next topic covered was the Nintendo Revolution’s new nunchuck-style controller and how it will allow new games to appeal to a wider audience in the future. His analogy was that everyone feels comfortable picking up and using a TV remote control device, but not everyone feels the same way about a video game controller. From here it was decided that the Revolution controller must be wireless, have a simple and approachable design, and yet be sophisticated enough for the established core gamers.

It also had to be “revolutionary” in terms of its abilities to create new and exciting gaming experiences. Such a controller doesn’t apparently come cheap, with R&D and manufacturing costs being higher than those of a regular video game controller. But Iwata said that Nintendo decided to invest money into the game experience here instead of channeling resources into higher technical specifications or end results that are only seen in terms of visual upgrades and the like. Looking for a brand new way to connect the player to his or her game is the goal of the Revolution controller, but at the same time it has to appeal to the established core gamer as well as entice the new non-gaming person.

The speech then briefly turned to the Revolution’s Virtual Console — which is the service being created for serving up the classic Nintendo back catalog. As mentioned, a newly-formed partnership with Sega and Hudson has been announced, meaning many more classic 16-bit video games will become available to Nintendo Revolution owners.

The biggest coup was the glimpse of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass that we were shown running on the Nintendo DS. Among a rapturous response from the auditorium, the game looked like it held true to the Zelda franchise. Sporting a 3D look and feel more akin to Animal Crossing than anything else, the bottom screen of the DS showed the action portion of the game, while the top screen seemed to be used for general statistics and information.

Being a DS title, there looks like there will be plenty of touch screen activities, ranging from puzzle solving, door opening, and even drawing a flight path for Link’s venerable boomerang weapon. Some of the action saw Link on-foot, fighting some familiar bad guys, while another scenario put Link in a small tugboat and had him sailing across an open stretch of water. The touch screen was used to plot out a route that Link would then follow in real-time on the sea. Although the footage only ran for little over one minute, it was enough for the audience to briefly lose their minds. Few franchises command that power in the industry.

Iwata then proceeded to talk about the importance of the WiFi functionality and service that the DS has brought to gamers over the last year or so. With Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World, gamers got their first taste of wireless gameplay on the DS. To date, over 1 million users have been online with their DSes and over 29 million gaming sessions have taken place. Iwata was quick to point out that this was a faster penetration rate then even the Xbox Live service has enjoyed. The new Metroid Prime: Hunters game sports the cool voice chat feature, but Iwata said that there are even more innovative ways to use the DS’s hardware going forward. Between Brain Age and games like Metroid Prime: Hunters, it certainly appears as though Nintendo is going to acquire a new audience while still catering towards its loyal core base of video game players.

The session ended with a summation that reiterated encouragement to disrupt the regular and traditional approach to video game design and implementation. Nintendo’s goal is to reach new players and keep the pastime of gaming one that remains fun for everyone. More on the Revolution and upcoming DS software will of course be revealed in May at the upcoming E3 convention in Los Angeles. GameSpy will be bringing you a full review of Brain Age very soon, and we’ll continue to update the site with new media and assets from Nintendo as they become available.
