I remember reading the fake 'leaked script' and thinking “Wow, if they can even come up with something half this good, it will be amazing."
However, they didn’t. I will never understand how they could advance the story so much with Halo 2 and then not really do much of anything with Halo 3. They took the easy way out. There was no Gravemind, Arbiter had no point in being in the game until he kills truth, and the whole “Everyone goes into the ark and then we blows it up!" was such a weak cop-out.
The slight love thing between MC and Cortana was ridiculous. (we all noticed it) I don’t think it was fair to have a great game like Halo 2 end in such a cliffhanger (which I thought was pretty good) and then not pick up Halo 3 at that exact moment....
What if the Lord of the Rings 2 and 3 picked up 40 minutes into the third movie and you had to buy comics to fill in the blanks? That makes NO sense! All in all, Halo 3 felt detached from the first two games.
I think the only reference to either of the previous 2 is when Johnson mentioned the map room from the first Halo and when MC and Spark first meet. Truth and the Covenant back story was built up so much in Halo 2, only to have all of their motives and ruthlessness be washed out and choked to death in Halo 3.
On top of that there is no real end to the Covenant War. You just assume you are fighting a great number of enemies then suddenly “OMG! Look out! Two scarabs!" The writers of this script, for whatever reason, took a really easy way out.
“I am a monument to all your sins." It implied so much more and wasn’t exactly covered in detail in the terminals. Besides, a part of the story as important as the mystery of human/forerunner deserved more than a couple sentences in a scene in the last level and a handful of terminal messages.
Why no Gravemind? Why no buildup to the activation of the artifact in Africa? It took four levels just to get there? Seriously, what a waste. The first four levels really could have been cut down and made into 1 or 2. Crows nest served no purpose other than to drag out the game with a meaningless backtracking level. The levels in Halo CE and halo 2 each were like a battle all on their own, it felt like each had its own legend and each was important to the overall scheme of the Halo universe and story arc.
You cannot tell me that Crows Nest and Tsavo Highway (while fun to play though) had any significance whatsoever. What if after the first level, you arrived at Voi? Does that change the game in any way? No and that shows the levels had no business being there and that space could have been used to extend the story in exciting and better ways, along with environments.
Halo 3 was full of what I think of, as level introducing scenes. Halo 3, much like Halo CE mostly had cutscenes at the beginning of each level, mainly just showing Chief/Marines arriving at that level. These scenes are not crucial to the overall story of the game really, they only show how you arrive, then everything unfolds from there. Except Halo 3, for the most part, failed at this.
Halo 3 had only 3 real scenes that were important NOT including the ending, those being the conference with the elites/Lord hood/chief etc, and the scenes where Keyes dies and Truth is killed.
Halo 2 was full of scenes like this. From the opening scene of Halo 2, which blew away the weak set up scene for Halo 3, to the Arbiter coming to be, to Tartarus killing, Gravemind, to the scene on the last level in which Arbiter tries to explain the truth to Tartarus. Hell, even the ending credits for Halo 2 were a sight to behold, unlike Halo 3’s boring, drab credits.
That is why Halo 3, all things considered from the first 2, was a letdown. The action was incredibly fun, the story was just bad though.
And I will forever be left wondering what could have been, of such a brilliant stroy.

Well halo did have many plot holes.
If I remember, at the ending of Halo 2 Keyes, Johnson, and the Arbiter were still stuck on Halo, so how could they have made it back to earth in the beginning of Halo 3 before Master Chief as his mission took place at the same time of the Arbiters? Also what happened to the remains of the covanent, surely that was not the last of them after the fight on the 7th mission, like what happened after it disbaned and what happened to the surviving Grunts, Jackals, Brutes, Drones, and Hunters?
I also remember that the first Halo was good and long but it used many repetieve rooms, many looked the same an it was sometimes hard to figure out where to go unless there was a glowing door or the distance marker appeared.
Halo 2 was nice because it sort of offered a 2 for 1 games deal with MC’s and Artbiter’s campaign. Only real use for the Arbiter in Halo 3 was to steal his sword if he falls or just let a friend play as him.
Bungie said they botched Halo 2 because they really only put in weapons that seemed to “Mirror” each other (Battle Rifle-Covanent Carbine) and a lousy job at vechicles, only 2 were added the wraith and the spector which is now the prowler.
In Halo 3 bungie did do great with at least 4 new vechicles and 1 of them being the hornet a fun human air vechicle. Weapons were better this time and forge could be used for some fun.

I thought Halo 3 was much better than Halo 2. For one, Halo 2 wasn’t that different than Halo 1. For example, the only new thing was that you had some new characters and the Elites left the Covenant. The rest of the mission was trying to destroy the Halo before the Covanent can use it (just like in Halo). Halo 3 at least explained a lot more about the Forrunners and let you explore something different besides a giant ring. I also found Halo 3’s single player to be more exciting and had so many things more to do than Halo 2’s single player. However, story wise, I think Halo 1 had the best.

Well in Halo 1 343 GS had hardly any point, and I will forever remember that game for the sniping pistol.

Well if you played Halo to see a good storyline then you were setting yourself up for dissappointment.
But I see what he was saying. The writing was just not good in a sense of keeping a steady pace. The first one had a simplistic storyline. Very linear. While Halo 2 took all these different directions and twists. Then Halo 3 went back to linear Halo 1 style of storyline. In the writing world this is what we call bad storyline progression, which we shall attribute to Bungie. To make a good trilogy you make the first very twisty and leave many wholes. The second builds on that but doesn’t make many twists but still builds. Doesn’t drop. And then the 3rd one is the resolution where it ties in all those holes.

I know Zucas doesn’t like Halo’s story but i for one have to say it is very good. I mean it has a lot of depth in it. I mean H3’s story wasn’t so good but the whole Halo universe does have a good story to it. I mean they have a whole timeline of events that happened like how Earth was overpopulated and it satrted rebellions and how after the rebllions were desgtroyed the UNSC met the covenant. I personally like the backstory of Halo. That’s wh yHalo Wars is pretty intresting. That and the fact it’s being made by one of the best RTS devlopers ever...
But Halo 3’s story wasn’t so great...to tell ya the truthe i only like H2’s story. More in depth and in detail. But what the games leave out i just read in a book.
btw Unit agrees with me on this.

I never dissed a single game’s storyline, but unfortunately its a trilogy. And it has to progress between the 3 games. But because of Bungie’s inexperience, which is what I’ll attribute it too(that or lack of deep thought), they were unable to make a connecting storyline. So instead you went from lines to circles to back to lines which confusing. Started off very simplistic to overly confusing to simplisticly boring. I mean if LOTR or Star Wars had anything like that we’d have hated it. It was an awful progression and no one game had anything compelling about it.
That’s why most people like Halo simply for it’s evolutionary gameplay of the time and first good online multiplayer. And really that is all the credit it should ever get.

well Zucas i’m not just talking about the storyline in the games...i mean what happened before and overall the story. I personally didn’t like Halo or H3’s story but like i said H2’s was good and inrtesting. However what i mainly am intrested in is what happened during the early Covenant encounters. The games have very little reflection on this time period. But overall Halo is a very good and in depth story. I mean if u read about what happened like 60 years before Halo 1 and stuff it’s pretty intresting and in depht. Also the Halo books explain a lot mroe than the games do.

^^^ Well books don’t count. Good games can create that compelling backstory without using books. AKA Resident Evil.
Anyone can make a story good by writing an in depth book about it. But to be able to do it in a game or movie even more so shows true genius and design.

Well triolgies often have this “curse” to them wether it is a game, movie, or book.
1st episode is great and often considered the best because it introduced a whole new element storywise or gameplay wise. Metroid Prime and Halo 1 were very nice for the fact that they bluit alot on showing only the beginning. Depending on how the story and gameplay are recieved it shows how it can make people hope for in a sequeal.
2nd episode is rarely stronger than the first, only games I can think of with just 2 in their series right now are pikmin 2 and Battalion Wars 2. Both games had many improvments over the first ones. Storywise it often starts a new conflict sometimes totally seperate from the one in the first episode. Like how the covanent dealt with the Arbiter and how MC and the UNSC found another Halo. Also in MP2E how the story of the phazon continued with the impact on Aether. They often have some kind of new conflict that is the main problem in the triolgy and it is what is resolved in the 3rd part. The second is sometimes good sometimes bad but most always think it is not as high as the first one for what it introduced and how everything came into action.
Whenever a sequel is made deveolpers and writers try to improve what they did not last time and try to make it better than the last one as they fully could.
3rd parts of a triolgy are usually the all or nothing end part showing the resolution to the story like how Anakin became Darth Vader. Yet some trilogies never even have a full story like the spider-man films, no villians ever reappear. In halo’s case they wanted to end the covanent and save the galaxy. In MP3’s case to finish off Dark Samus and the Phazon once and for all. They often have some kind of final epic moments before the climax and during the falling action you see the last moments of the characters to see what may lie in their future.
3rd parts are usually the one liked more and less than the 1st but definity liked more than the 2nd. Halo had a weird story but MP3 was actually a nice ending to a trilogy and had a wrap up so nothing was left wondering after the phazon was destroyed.

I remember at one point hearing rumors that before making Halo 3 there was going to be a game that went back and explained the Forerunners.
Since Bungie left Microsoft and Microsoft owns Halo, that will never happen.

Lotsa crap =/= deep or good
Halo 2 had a more in depth Multiplayer.
