In The Land of the Rising Sun, Sony has a hit with the PS3 Slim. A really, really big one.
In its first three days on sale, the newly redesigned console sold 150,252 units in Japan.

Yes the opening reception has been quite good and at the top of my predictions for it. (I had thought 100k-150k).
I expect it to drop quite heavily but it is definitely a bright spot for PS3’s future in Japan which for the most part has been quite bleak.
Also as someone else posted, preliminaries put it at about 500k first week around the world which is quite impressive. A great start, but we’ll see how it holds throughout the rest of September and into October. __________________

I saw you owning some kids on VGchartz who were like “yeah in 3-4 weeks the PS3 will pass the 360 for the year." They base their opinions off of nothing except personal bias and when you question them, they always just say “your just a fanboy!" Annoying as fuck. __________________ PSN Id: douthinkicare77 XBL GT: SoRcRAzY666

VGchartz update now states PS3 Slim easily topping 500k, now saying closer to 600k.
GT5 & FF XIII both coming 09 in Japan, could mean a massive sales increase. XBT Guest marts PC wrote:

Just shows how small the xbox is compared the potential of the Playstation. Nintendo on the other hand I see staying ahead of Sony especially when they as well cut the price of the Wii and introduce new colors in America/Others. __________________ PSN id: Solid4_Ace

I’d be surprised if it went up over the next month. I can see it staying steady or slightly dropping which is the safer bet. After a month would be my bet is when it dies down a bit, but the holiday season is right around the corner, so it’s no big deal for them.
The Slim should sell like hotcakes from mid Nov to Late Dec. The 360 will suffer the most in this. __________________

yea lots of Sony fanboys over at VGC so when anything good... or bad happens to PS3 I always have to play a kind of mediator and settle things down. Definitely a good opening for the PS3 Slim but people need to calm down. It’s first week hype and it’s obviously not going to sell 500,000 every week for the next year haha.
But yea you try to have a nice debate with them and they always call ya a fanboy. Some very annoying people at times. __________________

Well this pricedrop and new SKU increase is an abnormally large one. It’s not as big as DSi (190k in Japan, 400,000 in Europe, 400,000 in America) but for the position that PS3 was in it is quite abnormally large. This more than likely means there had been a lot of people who had already planned on buying a Ps3 that bought it as soon as the pricedrop and SKU came out.
Thus this means it’s going to be a larger increase than the usual price or new sku increases. Meaning it’s probably going to have a fairly large drop as less of those people who had been waiting buy it over the week. I think it’ll be at 250k-300k in its second week but I don’t mind being surprised in either direction.
The main thing facing it though is will it have an early peak. What that means is when you do something like this so close to the holiday season you run the risk of having smaller increases in the holiday season because everyone went out and bought it then that were going to buy it. Also arises when you aren’t the top brand which obviously Playstation isn’t anymore.
So legs are another story but it’s hard to judge. I’d give it another 8 weeks before we fully know how it’s going to go. But the main issue that PS3 has is that outside of Japan it doesn’t have a big holiday exclusive. PS3 will be fine in Japan with FF13 of course but in America and Europe they have to run solely off a Ratchet and Clank game and Uncharted 2. And while big games, they are nothing on the level that will get their brand heightened and bring get those holiday buyers to purchase the more expensive console over Wii or 360.
But if GT5 were to release this holiday season then that might absolutely change. But that obviously isn’t confirmed and more than likely GT5 will come out next year.
So PS3 is on the right track but still a long road before we can tell how effective this move is going to be. I still think, though, the main thing holding it back is the loss in brand appeal. If Sony had done this last year, it would be no question in my mind it would be a huge holiday success. But because MS gained huge brand last holidays and Wii has stayed steady (though down) it’s going to be rough. Not to mention ODST and Forza 3 for 360 and Wii Fit Plus and NSMB Wii for the Wii. That’s some big exclusives to compete with.
And I guess another thing kinda going against it is that 2009 has generally seen lower sales in comparison to 2008 and even 2007 to some extent. But hey we can’t predict the future. All we can say definitely right now is that it’s a great start for the PS3 slim and has the potential to be even bigger this holiday season. MS and Nintendo better have a way to fight back. __________________

Sony has’nt lost it’s brand appeal. PlayStation brand is doing fine. PS3 was selling even with a high price, that shows the brand is fine. Now the the price is down nothing will hold it back, sales will continue to rocket up.

There is plenty to get new PS3 owners buying games. marts PC Guest FF13 PS3 Bundle 'planned,' but nothing concrete yet
Sony boss Kaz Hirai has confirmed that a Playstation 3 Final Fantasy XIII bundle is in the works for Japan, but is not ready for full announcement just yet.
Speaking at the Final Fantasy XIII Premiere Party, Kaz congratulated Square Enix on their work on FF13 and the success of FF7 on the Playstation store before telling the crowds of journalists present that a bundle was “planned," but nothing was ready for announcement just yet.
Sony will undoubtedly be pushing Final Fantasy XIII as a major reason to own a PS3 in Japan, where the game is exclusive.
