You may have heard that Mad Catz signed a deal with Infinity Ward and Activision to create a line of official peripherals for Modern Warfare 2, including a special controller to play the game. Minds were blown, theories of motion sensitive gun shaped peripherals were thrown about, but the truth is much simpler. In a wide range of controllers for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, we’l be getting just a gamepad and earpiece. Lets take a look at them.
MW2 Combat Controller
MW2 Combat Controller
This is the Modern Warfare 2 Combat Controller for PS3, available for £39.99 (less at some retailers). As you can see it has a camo finish and grippy pads for your hands on the left and right. theres some backlighting to the analogue sticks too. Unlike its 360 counterpart it is also wireless thanks to a little USB dongle. Most importantlyt though it has two buttons underneath that can be reached by your middle fingers. These buttons can be mapped to a number of different functions (such as dash and melee) so that you dont lose accuracy in your movement or aiming by pressing the sticks or lifting your thumbs. It has an internal battery that can be recharged via USB and promises 60 hours of play per full charge. The camo finish is also supposed to be soft to the touch for hand comfort.

The PS3 also gets this Bluetooth Headset for wireless communication while playing online. Like the gamepad it has a camo finish and can be recharged via USB. Being bluetooth it can also be used with other devices such as you mobile phone. This does mean that we wont be getting the throat microphone that Xbox 360 owners can enjoy, but then that looks a little silly, so perhaps weve done OK out of this deal

I mean, controllers not made by Sony/Nintendo/etc. are always made really crappily, and break easily and malfunction.

Oh.
Hm, I had an air-conditioning controller for ps2 with grips and what not and it functioned just as good as the normal ps2 controllers.
Maybe this one will be the same? Maybe better? Who knows.. we will have to find out. I am definitely getting one.

Looks a bit like the 360 controller, which is a good thing.

My experiences with 3rd party hardware accessories on consoles has been mostly bad. Even the “good” experiences aren’t as optimal as just going with the first party accessories.
Usually I find the build to be less than stellar.
It’s a shame too, because this line of accessories is actually pretty cool. I’m not a fan of the camouflage look, but it’s still really neat. I’d hope they do it right (although, Mad Catz has, to me, worked better than most 3rd party stuff).
