Gray Umbra Research Facility

The lights flickered rapidly, like a strobe light in a horror ride. Luke Churchill and 2 other scientists were hiding in a room. The door was locked, but that would not stop them. But as long as they kept silent, hopefully, they would not find them. The room was small, the size of a classroom; white walls, white ceiling, a white tile floor. There were white work tables attached to the floor with various chemicals in glass test tubes and containers covering the surfaces. Luke was hiding behind one of these tables, the other 2 scientists were in the back corners of the room. Faint screams could be heard coming from the hallway, along with strange screeching noises. Luke overheard the other 2 scientists whispering to each other.
“Help should be coming soon. Someone pulled the alarm remember? That sends an S.O.S. to the military units guarding the entrance on the surface. Were going to be sa…” Suddenly a loud crash against the locked door of the room cut them off.

It was Luke’s first day at Grey Umbra Research Facility. He was a theoretical physicist, and was researching a new weapon prototype for the military; a weapon capable of harnessing and using the power of miniature black holes created by super magnets. He exited the air lock door and entered a large, white room with monitors showing videos about Grey Umbra Research Facility.

“Welcome to Grey Umbra Research Facility. I hope you have a safe and productive experience. Please report to the main desk for directions.” A security guard greeted him dryly.

Luke was sent to a testing room in Sector C of the facility. As he ventured through the hallways of Grey Umbra, he noticed some floors on the elevators, and some doors were marked prohibited, and required a key card to pass. A group of other scientists were gathered in a room with a large, black machine in the center. As he approached the thick, metal door that was split down the middle, both halves of it slid apart with a clank. He stepped into the room.

“You must be Churchill, welcome to Grey Umbra Research Facility. This here is a prototype of the black hole weapon were developing. Care to see a demonstration?” The scientists were in white lab coats, like him. He nodded at the offer, he was curious to see what this machine could do.

Him and the other scientists exited the room and entered a control room above the room containing the weapon. There was a window overlooking the room, to observe the demonstration. One of the scientists pressed some buttons on a control board and a humming noise started emitting from the weapon. Suddenly, there was a loud booming noise.

“What!? This isn’t is what is supposed to happen. I thought we fixed this problem. We need to make more improvements. Right now we can’t get near the prototype since the gravity in the room has increased to much, we will make improvements later. Feel free to continue exploring the facility Churchill, get to know it better so you won’t have problems getting lost in the future, it’s a big place.”

“What’s with the prohibited areas here” Luke asked.

“Strangely, know one knows around here. This is a government research center, maybe there’s some secret experiments they do farther down they don’t want us to know about. At least that’s what I think, but I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. Come back here a…” An alarm went off. A computerized voice began repeating, “Code Red, please evacuate the facility immediately.”

“What’s going on!?” Luke asked nervously.

“Could somebody have accidentally set off the emergency alarm?…” A scientist replied.

A loud screeching noise sounded in the distance, followed by screams.

“This is no accidental alarm. We need to get out of here.” Luke said in shock.

“We’d need to take an elevator to the top floor, were we could use emergency escape lifts.” said a scientist in panic.

A horrified scientist ran into the room and fell to the floor, out of breath.

“There’s…there’s monsters out there…their killing everybody…” stuttered the scientist, who’s clothes were torn and bloody gashes were covering his skin.

Everyone in the room was silent, trying to grasp what was going on.

“T-The elevators are off line…the power generator must be damaged, the monsters…they must have damaged it…”

“How do we get out!?” cried Luke desperately.

“Y-You’d need to use the ladders in the…in the…elevator shafts…but…i-it’s to dangerous…”

A huge creature suddenly appeared in the doorway. It was humanoid, but it’s arms ended in huge, claws covered in blood. It’s face was that of a deformed human, no eyes, tilted to the side, and veins showing through thin, reddish skin. Sharp bloody bones jutted out from it’s macabre body, forming what looked like body armor, and a large eye could be seen in the center of it‘s torso. 3 insect like legs sprouted from it’s torso. It let out the same, strange screeching noise that they had heard before. Standing above the terrified scientist on the floor, it raised it’s arm and impaled the scientist, and lifted him up. The scientist let out a gurgling sound as blood poured from his open mouth. The monster’s mouth stretched open, dislocating it’s jaw, it opened it’s mouth wide even to fit a person, and then swallowed the scientist whole. Luke and the rest of the scientists stood silent as they watch the gruesome sight. The monster then sprinted forward with a loud scream. Luke dashed around it, and quickly looked behind him to witness his collogues being ripped apart by the monsters massive claws.
He dashed into the hallway, blood and body parts were littered everywhere. He began to run down the hallway, there should be an elevator shaft in the supply bay nearby. A scientist was thrown against a wall at the cross section, he backed away. Then, to Luke’s horror, the light’s went out. It was pitch black. He could hear scream’s of death and strange cries from all directions. Could these monsters see in the dark? Luke curled into a fetal position. What were these things? Why would they be hear? The Prohibited area’s had to have something to do with them. But did it matter? He was doomed to die, in the dark, on his first day of work anyway. What could save him now?
He could hear the monster from before moving at the other end of the hallway. Then he heard silence. A sudden sliding noise broke the silence. Luke opened his eye’s that were tightly shut to reveal an open door leading to a room with a flickering light. A scientist kneeling by the door whispered,

“Hurry, you can hide in hear with us.”

Luke crawled into the room, and the door slid closed behind him.

“What…what’s going on…” Luke asked still horrified and confused.

The scientist looked down and whispered to Luke, “You should be aware of the prohibited areas of the facility. Well, some scientists, with special permission, work on projects down there, projects that should not be known by the public. I was one of them, I am probably one of the only ones who survived. I used the vents, they can’t fit in there, but I wouldn’t recommend going in them now, some of the smaller specimens may have been released.”

“What types of experiments did you do down there…”

“These, creatures, are bio-weapons. We were trying to develop a bio-weapon for military use. As you know, most experiments hear are for military advancement. Well, by using human DNA and altering it to create useful traits such as natural body armor, then growing specimens with this tampered DNA, we gave birth to new, gruesome breeds. We would not dispose of failed projects, that would be a waste of hard work and we could use them for future study, so we stored them in containment areas. But, one specimen escaped, and then proceeded to release more of the specimens. Now this whole facility is overrun by bio-weapons. But there is still hope, help may be on their way.”

“So, what do we do now.” Luke asked.

“Wait for help. They wouldn‘t just leave us hear to die…”

Luke crawled under one of the tables and the scientist crawled to the back of the room. For the next few hours, they listened to horrific noises from outside. Then there was the crash against the door. Then another crash. Luke braced himself for death. A voice from outside broke through the silence.

“The doors locked, were going to need to blast it open.”

“Were saved!” Cried one of the scientists.

It was to good to be true, it wasn’t one of the bio-weapons, the help had come. He stood up and saw one of the scientists run up to the door and unlock it for the soldier. The soldier raised his gun and fired several rounds at the scientist who fell to the floor dead. The other scientist, still in the back of the room stood frozen is shock and was shot down on sight. The soldier pointed his gun at Luke and the fired at him. Luke’s head exploded and painted the room with blood. The soldier pulled out a hand-held transceiver and lifted it to his head.

“All witnesses have been eliminated in Sector C, Sector D has been reported to have no survivors. The Bio-Weapons have been re-collected and will be returned to there holding cells. Clean-up of Gray Umbra Research Facility will begin shortly.”

Yeah, some parts of it are similar to Half-Life. But whatever. Do you think it’s ok?

It’s just a rough draft. And he only said it had to show something about human nature. I can just pull something out of my ass if he asks, like don’t mess with nature of something. At least I have a story.
