Hey folks, just here to share a few thoughts on how I feel about censorship in manga that’s supposedly geared towards a mature audience. Not quite hentai, but Seinen. (For example, the kind of censorship where they completely erase entire parts of a body).

It’s always been my belief that if you’re gonna draw something as part of your story, you should leave it all in. It’s a part of your hard work and time. I don’t even care if it’s something that I’d find incredibly off putting, or even down right disgusting, you should still leave it in. There’s a reason it’s geared towards “Adults”, right? So who exactly are they protecting by blotting out certain parts of particularly graphic scenes?

If it’s a law, I think it’s a rather absurd one that serves no purpose. I don’t see how it would hurt sells to leave in entire parts of graphic or even grotesque scenes, that’s the whole point of a “Seinen”. I almost consider it a violation of freedom of speech, but that’s just me. If you’re not going to leave a whole scene in as is, then just leave the entire thing out, I say.

tl;dr If you’re gonna attempt to censor something in a Seinen manga, just leave the whole thing out.

Why censor porn at all?

Only very few artists actually choose to put censoring in their own work. Many don’t have control over it.

Then I guess that’s a question geared to towards the logic that the bosses of said artists force upon them. It makes no kind of logical sense in the least bit.

It’s not because of the artists' 'bosses.' It’s because the law requires them to. Censorship mostly applies to easily accessible form of media, which is why most type of shows like anime tend to be uncensored in their DVD version as opposed to the broadcasted version, which are censored.

I’m not really talking about the anime though, but Seinen manga itself. I can understand anime that’s broadcast, sure. However, I’m talking about manga series that are explicitly geared towards “adults”. As far as I know, even the whole books you buy for yourself are censored in some parts. That’s what I don’t understand.

The keyword is accessibility. Anyone can pretty much pick up a seinen magazine from a bookstore and end up exposed to uncensored material and become 'offended' or whatever.

Being offended is irrelevant if you’ve had a warning though, that’s the whole thing. It’s like the cigarettes they sell with the surgeon warning on it. You can drop dead on the spot and legally nothing happens about it, because there was a warning. I don’t understand why Seinen manga can’t do with the “Adults only” thing on it.

Wow, just read that. Haha, what’s the logic of that? Why not censor gore as well? Hehe, sure let’s show a person’s head flying clear off, let’s show kids getting blown to pieces. But god forbid you show a person’s genitals!

What a backwards law...

yeah that law was kinda weird but people usually think that kids shouldnt be exposed to nudity and stuff like that but about gore maybe they just think that is just accion or something or they are to “busy” with other kind of problems uh

i dont really care about nudity or ecchi, but i dislike hentai

but well japan has a different culture is hard to understand

Actually, I think we’re talking about different laws. Law 156 would actually force alot of current manga to be pulled, it’s yet to pass. It’s more general in its terms for what’s considered “harmful”. I think I’m referring to Japan law 175 that restricts the distribution of “obscene” material. I.e, full frontal images of genitals, but makes it LOL TOTALLY OK to show a person’s guts getting torn out in full gory detail.

I’m just sick of the hypocrisy more than anything. You go through a series that has laughably gory elements, but then you get to a sex scene and they completely freak the hell out and etch parts of that out. Apparently it’s like that for their porn too. Showing gory murder on full screen is ok in Japan, but a person can’t go to their private home and watch people get it on in full without getting arrested? There’s an entire black market dedicated to distribution of uncut material.

Very inconsistent and flawed.
