The biggest movie this year finally hit the theater. It managed to garner lots of audiences. On the other hand, it also gathered surprisingly large amount of negative review. I had some doubt in those reviews, and watched the movie with my family. Keep in mind that I am relatively a casual moviegoer, not stingy movie critic. However, I believe movies should stick to their own focus. If they fail at doing this, they aren’t good movies.
The movie starts Autobots and US army chasing down remaining Decepticons. Just like previous movie, it is just damn confusing and hard to follow who is who. They decided to show many kinds of Transformers in this movie. We see new robots such as 3 motorcycle guys and 2 robots on ice cream truck. The reason I barely remember the names? Blame the movie. The movie hardly gives details on all those robots. I expected at least few spotlights from those guys, but the movie didn’t live up to expectation.
Now you switch to Sam’s view(Sudden change that doesn’t seem natural). He gets to move on to college. Michael Bay’s style once again showed some minor humor that made few audiences in theater laugh. But the thing is those humors are sometimes felt downright insulting to current standard of moviegoers. Sam’s mom give some laughing point, but I didn’t find it hilarious.
Sam meets his roomate Leo who happens to be boss of internet blog site. The guy provides very little to story. Sadly, he loses to other extra when it comes to contributing to whole storyline. It seemed like he has his own going for a while, but as movie goes he doesn’t do much at all, but being mere annoyance.
Although Sam expected normal life, the fate didn’t allow so. Decepticon in girl disguise comes to kill Sam, but he and his friends manage to get away. Optimus Prime sacrifices his life to save Sam. Yeah. Prime stole all thunder from other Autobots. Give them some roles for sake.
The problem is this doesn’t change even at the end.
Sam and his friends visited Agent Simmon who got kicked away from government for help. At least, it was nice to show someone who was neglected in previous film. With his help, they found old transformer who uses stick for walking. The old robot pulls some trick and teleports everyone to Egypt. He explains everything. You see background that helps building storyline.
This is one of the elements that actually do movies some justice although it doesn’t completely save it.
The group go ahead to find matrix. Here is one of annoying parts from the movie. The two robot twins begins to fight inside the structure for bizzare reason. And they cracked the wall that hid matrix. The way they fought was really annoying. It didn’t seem natural or smooth at all. It seems filmmakers hurried too much for later action scenes.
Sam carries dust of matrix to restore Prime while US soldiers and Autobots defend remain of Prime. This movie is named Transformer, but the only Transformers that get shining spots are Prime and Bumble Bee. Bumble Bee’s fight scene was entertaining, yet confusing as rest of scenes. More Decepticons arrives. It seems good side is in worse situation. However, reinforcement arrives, stealing more spot from Autobots. You don’t see other members of Autobots doing much which is sad. You can call the movie Transformer and US army at this point. The director was said to hate Obama and support Bush. That’s why movie showed more of US army.
What about Ironhide? What about 3 motorcycle robots?
On the other hand, Simmon and Leo and robot twins face Devastator. As I mentioned before, new guy doesn’t do much here. Agent Simmon calls bombardment on it. And that’s where they stop showing. Not much for Leo. I was expecting some role from him, but he didn’t live up to expectation.
Sam managed to ressurect Prime, but Fallen steals the matrix to activate the Sun crusher. The old Jetfighter sacrifices his life and bond with Prime, pulling something out of nowhere.
Optimus Prime goes kicking butt of Fallen and Megatron. The fight ended pretty fast. Fallen didn’t do much anything. Fallen got destroyed, but Megatron and Starscream escaped which foreshadow sequel.
The movie is quite entertaining. However, it could’ve been a lot better. Some humor and action parts are subpar. The movie didn’t keep its focus. I hope sequel doesn’t contain these problems.
