Still, Cannibal Corpse was never a particularly grand band at all though.

Agree 100% on the first part, second part I somewhat agree. Their old stuff was decent, a few songs passed my expectations of a great death metal song, but there are far better death metal bands out there I prefer to listen to..

Rep: 71The problem with death metal as a genre is it focuses too much on being brutal and heavy to be enjoyable to listen to.
Cannibal Corpse had a handful of songs with a decent melody, fewer of them were worth any time.

I disagree. Brutal Death Metal and Deathgrind and some Tech Death, yes, is too focussed on brutality, but most bands from different subgenres focus more on the music than brutality (Opeth is an example, so is Autopsy, Ahab [if you consider them Death metal]) etc.

Just about any band classified solely as “Death Metal” sounds like garbage.

I am the opposite. I find most of the genre a great genre. Death metal is among my favorite genres in metal, however in recent days I have been listening to primarily Doom Metal.
