Straight up? Hmmm...

NYC? Well, Better lyricists (Rakim, Nas, Prodigy, Jay-Z, MF Doom), poets (Rakim, Nas, Prodigy), freestylers (Rakim, MF Doom), and flow (Rakim, MF Doom) in general.

LA? Many are just as good as the NYC spitters (Dilated Peoples and Cypress Hill are my favorites), but the main thing that makes LA good is the beats. They can be as good at rapping, but they are to beats as NYC is to DJing and spitting (especially Dr. Dre).

NYC has more diversity, so you have more to choose from [calm, crazy, sexy (to the ladies, not me), and many others].

LA is either crazy or calm (the calm ones will shoot you, then stab you, then piss on your face, then rap on your grave while on sherm).

NYC is where it all started...

But LA has much, much more street cred (specifically LA)...

It’s really all in your musical taste. So just listen and make your own decisions. I’m honestly more influenced by the gangsta side of NYC as a rapper and beatmaker, but I do take a page from Dre and put in some mad high-pitched synthesized keyboards for good measure. By the way; I’m white, and from Dallas, Texas; so I have to know how to spit and I have to know my hip-hop to be taken seriously around here (or anywhere for that matter).

Wait, looking back, there are alot of really good underground LA rappers (my point still stands though).
But on the note of the dirty south, I’m down with all that, but I just ain’t feelin' it most of the time. Maybe just cause I’m bombarded by it all the time. But they still have talent like the others, just a different brand of it (which is good, so nobody say I’m hatin'!).

debatable. Compton seems to be the only place that is noted in west coast gangsta rap. nyc had a humongous crack epidemic in the late 80s. so if youre talking street cred, bed stuy was just as bad as compton. while compton was dominated by gang feud, ANYONE could get shot in bk regardless of gang affiliation. new york also has the most diverse number of gangs. yea cali is known for bloods and crips but new york’s street cred matches cali as a whole and if not had more of a street cred. i know, considering im from new york. and this is from a new yorker’s view. im not belittling compton but bed stuy in new york (home of notorious big and many others including jay-z and fab) was the one place NOBODY wanted to go to. compton is probably more well known than bed stuy but anyone who knows anything about east coast hip hop knows that BK was a place u didnt wanna fuck wit. id say new york city as a whole had more street cred than LA back then only because nyc had some of the poorest and largest projects in the nation (aka queensbridge: home of nas). the bx (bronx) was also well known for its street cred back then (home of fat joe and grandmaster flash). harlem was definitely well known for its street cred (home of the late great big l).

basically my point is, new york city as a whole had more of a street cred. you can put in murder statistics and what not but it doesnt take away the fact that new york had bad neighborhoods everywhere whereas much of what we hear from rap about the west coast focused simply on compton.

therefore if u wanna make a comparison between la and nyc, it would have to be something like:

Compton vs. Harlem, Spanish Harlem, Bedford Stuyvesant, Flatbush, East New York, Queensbridge, Jamaica, Bushwick, and areas in the Bronx. Do the math. I can see where people are going to debate this. “compton had one of the highest murder rates in the nation back then” but guys, you need to realize that compton was just ONE area in LA whereas new york city had that kinda shit happening everywhere.

your post had nothing related to rapping If you want to talk about how bad LA sucks and how good NY is, please post in a different section. Your post has been revised because it will most definitely instigate something on this thread.
