Well, if you want to make 2D games that are SIDESCROLLERS, that means Metroid Fusion (etc) Mario, Sonic, then get Game Maker. If you want to make 3D games, then you first need to get a 3D model construction program. I use MAYA Personal Learning Edition, made by Alias, as for making the game after you have your models, I don’t know.

If you make a virtual environment in maya, you can import this in the program Virtools.

With virtools you can make a figure walk through your 3d environment. So you can make your own game, let and control the figure with your keyboard, mouse or joystick.

I’m not an expert with Virtools but you can do much more stuff with it then this.

you should know some c++ language since it is the most comonly used language by software developers. 3d games are hard. making the AI is hard i hear. physics is hard the gameplay, and interface and eye candy.
