If there is no light, there can be no darkness as darkness needs light to be shadow and darkness is simply the absence of light. Without light, there wold be no darkness as there would be no absence of light if light was not to exist.
Light is also the absence of darkness.
The two can not exclude each other and exist in a symbiotic relationship.
Without one or the other, there is just existence. Darkness is feared because of the power of light. Light is revered because of the coming of darkness.
however if you want to get technical, light contains more energy as darkness is only the absence of light and therefore darkness is nothing but the absence of energy, rendering it nothing.
So on the basis of actual power contained, light is the winner.

Light is not always the winner, but in most cases it is so.
