(C&P’d from another guy)
Who do you think is better at teaching survival techniques?
Les Stroud (Survivorman)
He films his own shows. So he is doing everything himself AND carrying 50 pounds of extra gear. Showing he trusts in his own skills.
He believes in saving your strength. Which is good if your lost by yourself, and need to do many things to set yourself up for rescue.(Example, to get to the top of a cliff to signal a helicopter, he would find a safe and easy way to get to the top instead of climbing straight up.
He teaches that staying out of trouble in the best way to get out of trouble (Example, on a glacier with crevices in it, just go around and play it safe)
He actually stays in an area for 7 days.
He builds devices to help with survival (Ex. Sharpen a rock to save your knife, make snowshoes out of boughs to walk through deep snow.
He saves some of his food.
Bear Grylls (Man vs. Wild)
He has a camera crew and safety team: So he can show us more extreme survival techniques.
He believes in using all your strength to survive, or signal for help.(he would risk climbing the cliff to get a signal fire going sooner)
He shows how to get out of tough situations(climbing out of a crevice)
He keeps going even if its tough( snowshoe example, in 2 foot snow he would keep walking with breaks instead of making snowshoes)
He eats the food he finds imediately.
He only stays in a survival area for a max of 3 days, with breaks in between. So he can risk doing things that would cost you precious energy and calories in a real situation.
In my mind Les is a better teacher of survival techniques, simply because he actually survives in the area for 7 days, by himself, with limited communications with a safety camp 4 hours away.
Bear Grylls teaches you how to get out of things that could be avoided, if you simply wouldn’t exert your self so heavily, look for an easier path, or simply following the #1 rule of survival
My thoughts:
Bear gryls show is blown out of proportion, all of his techniques are real and work well, but he has extra safety precautions offscreen because he does more dangerous things, all his techniques are valid though, plus I like how he shows you how to get out of the more dangerous situations (the glacier stunts) by putting himself in them, even if he does have tons of people waiting to save him if he gets in trouble a meter off screen, he still does it,
Les is more experienced and smarter in the wild IMO.
Also: something funny, an episode (they didn’t air it I beleive) Bear apparently was in the Canadian wilderness and had lost track of where he was, and he wound up using things he learned directly from the survivorman show.
