In order to maintain an atmosphere of oxygen, there must be plants to keep the meat eating animals alive by providing oxygen, unless the animals you speak of were all carnivorous plants.

In a way, yes, but than again no.
If by function properly, you mean the food chain still be in tact, than yes, it would. Everyone would be the hunters and the hunted. While it would be dangerous, it would remain stable. But herbavores are used in many ways. They help plants reproduce and act as a way to control the over reproduction of certain plants. So in a way, having them creates a balance in the planet.
(God I’m tired, sorry if that made no sense.)

I say it depends on the situation. But I’ll wait for more answers before saying my bit.

Maybe? Can there be microscopic germs that slowly and painfully dissolve the higher beings?

if there was only carnivores, there would be no source of energy. that would be all fine, except that everything uses energy. so, the general population would be loosing energy, but not gaining any. when a given animal eats another given animal, it only gets a fraction of its energy (about 10%, i believe). because of this, it wouldn’t take long for there to be no life.
so, the answer is a resounding no.

so, your suggesting that they use photosynthesis? that would mean they would be plants. i guess i should clarify my answer. a society of animals that can only get energy from each other cannot survive.

A creature that uses photosynthesis’s does not mean it’s entirely a plant. And I never said creatures only, either.

yeah feeding only on other creatures is imposible but if they could use photosynthesys only to supplement and the rest was another creature it might work but ur right it would be part plant and thusly they would be omnivores

you said carnivore. do you know what a carnivore is? it is an animal that eats only meat. there are carnivorous plants, but they are still plants, and thus not carnivores.
