Lock thread happy? - A discussion on poor taste

I’m going to seem spam-ish now because I had to make a topic on topics that have already been locked.

But I wanted to give an opinion too...
Just because the “issue” was resolved by locking the “eating 3rd world children” doesn’t mean we can’t still add our two cents to the issue.
I’m not mad or anything GN, I just wanted to add something but certainly didn’t want to make a new topic for it.

So I guess what I’m tying to say is...sorry for making a new topic but I think it’s a legit discussion to have.

So having said all that:

This thread is about topics in poor taste and the tolerance thereof

So a topic on eating third world children was locked due to members finding the content in poor taste.
I do agree it was in poor taste, but I posted myself (though did point out that I did not actually find it funny).
What I don’t understand is why that thread was locked when others have remained open?
There have been countless topics subjectifying women for example, but the idea that it might be offensive never comes into question.

If the topic under question read “how do you eat children”
I doubt very much that there would have been the same reaction…but why should that be any less offensive? Are children in “third world” counties deserving of more respect then children in general?

I guess this topic is pointless because from the look of it was more a personal choice of Etains to lock the original.

I guess I just wanted to point out that the move was hypocritical, not that the thread itself should remain open.

I’m just in a bad mood, having gotten about 7 messages in my PM box about locking that thread, and punishing the people who posted in it. Which isn’t really even necessary.

I disagree
it’s not about the 3rd world children getting more respect but actually deserving it a lot more

now I wanted locked because of a very logical reason

and I don’t get tired of saying this

racist behavior like that feeds courage to then post topics like these:

“How to overwork third world children”

now I know this is already staring to take effect

Is that appropriate?

aside from being offensive it denigrates MvC face to new members

it rots and gives MvC a bad look

I don’t think “third world” children deserve more respect then other children.
In fact I find that view to be racist.
When you value one race, sex, nationality over others, or feel one should have more rights or respect, that is being racist.

I went and volunteered in Africa for 5 weeks (which isn’t long but I didn’t have the money to stay longer), I met the most amazing children there and have seen some of the most gut wrenching situations.

If I had a magic wand to make everyone here more respectful and considerate I would use it.
It’s hard, because it’s difficult to tell when a member is expressing true ignorance and cruelness or not.


I have a good number of friends who joke about race all the time. But we joke about it because it’s a nonissue. We know we’re different from each other and we love it.

Now the eating children idea is pretty bad (regardless of where their from), but interestingly enough it’s brought into question our own ideas about censorship.
That topic was locked because it’s considered a “faux pas” by many members. Not because in reality it is any more or less offensive then some other topics.

Its the internet so we don’t really know each other and you can’t get the same feel for a persons position as you can in real life.

The only thing that’s keeping the forum from thriving are renegade members who constantly break the rules and refuse to leave the forum in peace and end up starting huge messes of problems.

I’m also looking for MvC’s wellbeing I love this place, I love posting here and I see how it’s dying very slowly and to post things like that they just scare off members that CAN keep this site alive for a long time to come

No.. People have left because of the increasing immaturity level of the site.. Something which you’re beginning to exhibit (all caps anybody?)

And you can fight to have them locked, and since Etain (no offense intended, just helpful criticism) seems to mod more on her own feelings than site rules, you’ll probably succeed. But that in no way makes it as if those thread deserved to be locked.
