So my partner and I have decided to only eat food that comes from our local area (about 150km/100 mile radius) for 6 months.
We’re doing this partly because the current North American food production system is unsustainable, requiring great amounts of energy and imposing negative effects on the environment (among other things).
The challenge is there to really raise awareness (for ourselves) about where our food comes from. By really restricting where our food can come from forces us to look at everything we eat and to think outside the box.
This way of eating also supports local farmers and businesses, and it’s healthier for you
.
We started on June the 21st and we’ll end on Dec the 21st.
Because we’re doing this for so long, we have a few exceptions:
We have 6 “allowables” (foods that don’t need to be local) but even those have restrictions:
1. Salt
2. Baking soda
3. Baking powder
4. Beer (must be from a local micro brewery)
5. Coffee (must be fair trade organic)
6. ? (we haven’t chosen a 6th one yet, so we’re leaving it open but maybe we’ll never use it.)
We’re also giving ourselves 6 restaurant outings (more if the food is all local).
And there are exceptions if we’re travelling or visiting other people, for practical and social reasons.

Eating this way really forces you prepare a lot more from scratch.
The neatest thing I’ve learned to make so far is pasta.
But even something as simple as chicken stock, I’d never made before now.

The more you learn...
When making a pasta dish, chuck in a lot of vegetables, spices soy sauce etc. to give it a great flavour.
Also, noodles are damn easy to cook and taste great when combined with other foods.
Cereal and fruit is always good, as well as yoghurt and fruit.

What are you talking about?
Soy sauce and spices arn’t local to where I live. Are they local to you?
Yogurt and fruit we eat, but I challenge you to find cereal that’s made locally.
