Let’s get right down to it. The Bible has been rewritten by plenty of different people plenty of different times, and, in most cases I’ve seen, it’s still often called the word of God. However we all know there are different religions* using differing versions of the Bible with claiming to have the word of God.
So, for those who read it, how do you see it? The opinion of some guy claiming to know the word of God, or is it the actual word of God? Do you follow it word for word, or more as a book of guidelines on how to live?
*Probably includes different types of Christianity as well
(P.S. Expecting to soon be called the next Gplex

though i am no longer a Christian..xi find that when i was one, that the bible was more of a book of guidelines and that it was meant to keep the christains of the world pure and on a moraly correct path that would lead them to heaven...most people seem to think it restricts several things when the restrictions most think of is actually supported in the bible itself...
Ex: the drinking of alcohol.....it is actually supported in the bible...not the abuse of alcohol.....but the use of it in a celebration...
the bible is used to shepherd not control...a common misconception...not that i am saying anyone here thinks that....but in general....

i don’t care my “classification”
but if i have to play a role in a religion that i don’t really care about to acquire my ambitions...i could care less....i find religion is a tool...one that i admire the founders for using...i mean just think...in African tribes if a man started a fire without using the same stuff everyone else used....he said he called on the gods and he instantly became one of the most powerful men in the tribe....

Yes. And I have a great quote to go with that...
“Religion, to the common people it is true, to the wise it is false and to the kings it is useful.“-Napoleon.

exactly!
religion is a way to shepherd a large amout of people to do you things you want them to....i bet no one way back when would have thought it would go to the levels that it is now...and i honestly think of it kinda as waste....like a disease gone wrong...i mean it was probably made to control...and now the religion itself is in control(though they are dead it should have died with’em) and not the person who started it so he would gain power.....
these things came into my mind after i stopped listening to the bible and started to listen to reason.....

Logic always destroys faith in an argument but people tend to ignore the logic, I think they try to convince themselves that their religion is true no matter what doubts they have for various reasons. They desperately want to believe to the same extent as their family, the social stigma of having a minority religion (or non-religion religion (e.g. Atheism)). They don’t want to believe they spent their entire life worshiping something that isn’t there. Or they are to afraid of the Hell Fire that they have believed in for years.

i’m not sure your religius experience..but with mine i still fear hell... no matter how much i tell myself there is no hell....or that i won’t go...it still haunts me...it is due to my upbringing is my hypothesis....since i was taught if you aren’t a Christian your going to burn in hell since as long as i can remember....so it is drilled in my head....and that is probably what made me take so long to get away from Christianity....it’s pretty much being brain washed....and is still makes me kinda sad that one of my friends has cut off all ties with me because of my decision.....

First of you can tell your friend with such a huge amount of religious ignorance his head must be stuck up his ass that he can go and fuck himself with an iron stick. Seriously if he is going to be a bitch about religion then he deserves a verbal beat down like that.
Anyways my religious experience was thankfully open minded at first... until I began going to a YCE Baptist church for after school on Fridays. After about 2 hours of very subtle religious indoctrinations every week I was certain God and his eternal inferno existed. I was like that for a few years until I discovered a marvelous invention, the Internet. After a bit of reading I turned Agnostic, then after reading the God Delusion I classified myself as an atheist.
Oh and about Hell? I would much rather go to it than Heaven. Why? Because God is a douche. Read the old testament.

Actually... the whole “hell fire” thing was only created in the 17th century for the King James revised edition of that holy book. Originally it was just a waiting room for judgement day, no fire at all.

even then you still are alone...(and if my memory serves) in total darkness....and what will happen after judgment day?
i mean...you won’t just be forgiven magically....
that would be too easy...

Read the old testament.
if you feel no pain in heaven...how can it be worse than hell?
and in hell you are in constant pain...and since this is divine intervention we are discussing there is little logic to be had....just interpretations of a long since dead book...
Actually... the whole “hell fire” thing was only created in the 17th century for the King James revised edition of that holy book. Originally it was just a waiting room for judgement day, no fire at all.
even then you still are alone...(and if my memory serves) in total darkness....and what will happen after judgment day?
i mean...you won’t just be forgiven magically....
that would be too easy...
The thing that bugs me is that people automatically assume that if an after life actually does exist then it is obviously the Christian version, as if no other religions opinions on the subject matter. Personally if there was an after life I think that the FSM version is without doubt the best, even the hell is bearable if you don’t mind stale beer and hookers with STD’s.

lol the talk about hellfire makes me think of something...
Who here knows all of Gods exact expectations to get into Heaven for 100% certain, raise your hand!
To those who raised their hands:
Good job, you can read minds and are now technically smarter than a supposedly omniscient being. You’ve just surpassed infinity and divided by zero at the same time.
