They use the shadow on the moon to calculate the distance to the sun.
Ah no, using some sort of time measuring device, he (I forgot who read it a long time ago) measured shadows of 2 sticks that where the same height at the same time but they where 20 km apart. By finding the differences and using some simple mathematics they were able to calculate the circumference of the planet.
