I’m a living example of choosing what to believe. I believe the Bible is open to interpretation, and I interpret that the Bible does not specify the method or means that he created the universe, nor does it specify that the “day” is actually 24 Earth hours.
Therefore, it’s perfectly feasible to believe God created all the animals on the planet via the Darwinian theory of evolution and such. And there’s nothing saying that He didn’t intervene in the evolutionary process to stimulate the evolution of humans.

I believe life was created by God through stimulated abiogenesis.
I think that what that person means (you know who he is) is that people of certain religions seem to deny the existence of violence or detestable behaviour by their prophets and ancestors in their respective holy books.

That saying usually gets applied to (and should only get applied to) individuals who claim that the Bible is the infallible word of god and that certain parts have to be taken literally...but then conveniently the part that applies to them is “only metaphorical”. The “you can’t pick and choose” comment should only be applied to hypocritical people.
Otherwise...of course you should choose what you believe. Many people who follow the Bible have different interpretations, not only of individual passages, but of the nature of the book itself (e.g. largely metaphorical, partly metaphorical, literal word of god, etc.) They have a right to their ideas.

From reading all the crap on here its obvious the person whose been throwing this phrase around is misusing it because he’s throwing it at people who believe in the Bible but in a more metaphorical way and know the Bible is not infallible, which is exactly why they don’t take it all literally.
The phrase is just another way to twist things. They call it strawmen.
