No, and yes it does waste your life. But isnt it awesome!

Actually the answer is..: math makes your brain more open to new ideas and solutions. Its not so much what you are learning more of what ur brain is doing to solve the equation.

It all depends what you plan on doing in your work environment. If you are an engineering major like myself it means the world to you.

Well back to work. I’ll be home in about 4 hours. I’m seriously shit faced right now. In the last two day’s I’ve gotten 12 hours of sleep, 14 hours of carrying a 30 pound backpack around school and 13 hours of working my ass off at my shitty job as a bag boy.

I used to be a (wood) Truss framer. I was soo fucking fast no one could come close. Another guy and I could whip out a run of Two-Hundred 50'-0 long trusses in half hour in the Las Vegas July desert heat. That’s hard f*cking work constantly dripping sweat and pushing all your limits 10 hours a day testing your strength and endurance! Now, I got smarter, not work harder. However, the stress levels have gone way up working an office job from physical labor. Man, was I was in great shape back then.

ok so... this is the question:
find all horizontal and vertical asymptotes of the function.
f(x) = x / x - 1
ok so i’m pretty sure i understand what a vertical asymptote is. would a vertical be 1? and is that all i would need to write? and i have no idea how to find a horizontal asymptote.
thanks again for any help!

Like someone above said, you should put parentheses. You probably meant
f(x) = x/(x-1)

Here’s a more general procedure for finding asymptotes:
- For horizontal ones, check what values the function approaches as it nears infinity and negative infinity.
For this example, you’d have inf/(inf-1), which reduces to 1. And for negative infinity to you have -inf/(-inf-1), which also reduces to 1.
- For vertical asymptotes find where the denominator could be equal to zero.
Here the denominator is x-1. So set x-1=0 and you find at x=1 you have a zero denominator. Like someone else said above, if you want to know whether it goes up or down the asymptote on either side, try very close values (0.99 and 1.01 for example) and see if the result is positive or negative (you don’t even need to evaluate). If you plug in 1.01 into x/(x-1) you have positive/positive, which is positive. So you know on the right the curve rises up. If you plug in 0.99 you have positive/negative, which is negative, so you know on the left the curve goes down.

I suppose most practical uses of calculus are in physics and engineering, but consider these as mental gymnastics. I’d rather see ethics and logic courses in school curriculae, to make people intelligent voters (and to think critically on issues rather than go for popularity or emotional appeal of the candidates). That’d be more practical, but the mental gymnastics from math flexes some muscles, so I wouldn’t consider it useless.

And when you get to calculous, you can just use Limits and Derivatives to figure that stuff out in a quick and timely matter.
