Topic Review (Latest First)This issue is a bit like drugs, I think it needs balance. I don’t think outlawing guns completely will solve the problem because that will prevent the government from being able to regulate it.
Obviously ordinary citizens should NOT be able to own fully automatic because really, they’re not designed for much else other than killing large numbers of people. Handguns and semi automatic weapons perhaps should not be completely banned but I can only think of rare circumstances where people should have them.
People should be strictly tested to get gun licenses before they can get a gun, making sure people with ANY kind of violent personality, past emotional/mental problems (even if it’s just depression) and/or criminal record will not be able to own a gun and that people owning a gun will know how to use it safely and must keep it locked up in a secure place. They should also have a decent reason for owning a gun, like having livestock or game shooting or something. Make guns more difficult to operate so stupid people can’t use them To cut this argument short, I’d like to say that gun control isn’t going to help reduce violence/death rates in US by much. raep wrote:

You realize you’re talking about something that’s sole purpose is to kill, right?

That is true...

Oh! While it was designed to kill, they are very safe devices when used properly. They have ways to prevent accidental shots such as the very common safety feature. Honestly, the only dangerous part of a gun is the user behind it. If someone is trying to kill someone else, or being fucking stupid (shooting a bullet into the air) then yes, the gun poses a problem.
But why the hypocrisy?
You wouldn’t ban a car, although it is also a dangerous machine, and can be used with intent to kill. You don’t ban knives. You don’t ban your own fists.
A gun can be used for recreation, such as target practice or hunting game. It is also a good form of self-defense, and does work as a bluff so as to keep from having to resort to a kill (although that depends on the control of the user too).
My point is this, you are trying to fix a symptom and not a cause. You can’t cure the flu by merely opening your sinuses, and you aren’t going to stop people killing other people by banning a gun. You do that, you provoke innovation. No, you should teach non-violence instead. RageOverdose wrote:

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. No making it illegal does fix the issue. You just got to crack down on the people that break the law. Instead of letting them go with simple misdemeanors for every drug head you find, how about you throw them in jail for a year with a high bail. I bet you’d see it drop then. With no buyers the sellers disappear and the business dies.
Problem is we always say not enough jail space and worse crimes out there. While true, we see drug possession and use as a minor crime thus the criminals don’t take it seriously. If we take it seriously it’ll go away. Of course, the government and the people in this god damn country are too much of pussies to do what is necessary to achieve justice. How sad that the druggies can walk around everywhere just like the good citizens. If that isn’t chaos then tell me what is.
No, this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, because it ignores evidence that goes against the claim that was taught in middle/high school.
Prohibition, which banned alcohol for similar reasons as to why people want to ban guns, did NOT work at all. It CREATED more crime and corruption than it tried to stop. Why? Because there were enough people against it. This may not happen again, but making something illegal is not guaranteed to stop it. People constantly download music, people constantly smoke weed. These things are illegal, yet are still done on a daily basis, and people are fruitlessly trying to stop them.
Banning guns, in my opinion, is stupid because it doesn’t solve the violence problem. People shoot others because of their violent nature (basically), so taking it away would make them go to another source if they couldn’t get access to guns, or they’d go to the black market. Taking away a human’s right to own something that isn’t inherently dangerous except in the hands of a dangerous person is another example of people’s tendency to attack symptoms, but not the problem.
Perhaps if we didn’t promote violence as a proper act of solving conflict, maybe violence wouldn’t occur. If we didn’t have so many illegal recreational drugs, guns wouldn’t be used in those crimes. Green_Ninja wrote:

I said this in the other thread about 2 years ago, and I’m sure a million people have said it in this one..
But..
If we take guns away, the only people that will have them are those who are willing to go against the law.
While it may take away guns from a fraction of those who will use it wrongly, it will take away our protection from those people, too.
While I think we should limit how available those guns are (You can buy em anywhere, honestly...), I don’t think they should be gone completely.
That’s really only because America fucked up gun laws in the first place.
If you don’t fix the law NOW, it will get worse and worse until you won’t have the option to even attempt a fix.
It has nothing to do with laws.
You can’t fix people wanting to hurt someone. Violence can’t be outlawed.
If someone is going to hurt someone, they’re going to do it regardless. Guns just help -US- protect ourselves from those others who have them.
So let’s make guns illegal.. so when someone wanting to rob us comes in to our house with an illegal weapon, we can’t defend ourselves against it. We’re stuck with a knife or something, while they have a gun. That sounds SOOOOOOOO much better than someone breaking in to my house with an illegal weapon and me actually having a CHANCE of defending myself.
You can ban guns all you want. Those who want them will have them.
You can’t just say “oh, it has nothing to do with laws” when the United States, the country where it is arguably the easiest to buy a gun, has the highest gun-related death rate.
Hell, in every other country where it’s harder to get a gun than just prancing into wal-mart, guess what? They STILL have less deaths by guns than the US, by a huge fucking margin.
And in those countries, you can still say most of the people with guns have them illegally, and yet they still have less deaths than us from guns.

People need to stop thinking that only people who get guns illegally are dangerous. There are plenty of murders that get taken out with guns that are completely legal, probably by people who’ve owned the gun for a long time.
Not every instance of gun violence is the result of gangbangers. The MASK wrote:

Sounds fun.
Scary thing is it might work.
