As a person with a reasonable amount of sport physiology training and weight training experiance, I suggest you take the Protein shake after your heavy sessions as the carbs and protein will help recover the muscles and rebuild the energy stores contained with in the muscles which will help break down the lactic acid, which is the bi product of anaerobic training and is the substance that gives you that burning feeling in your muscles when you work out.
Taking the shake before the training will give you energy but will not give you as much benefits as drinking it after.
The general rule is take some carbs 20 mins before training to give you the extra oomph to blitz through the workout and give you good results and take a carb and protein shake after to recover quickly and bulk up muscle mass.
A good pre workout snack is Half a dozen almonds, a banana and some mixed seeds for potassium, protein, iron and carbs. all these things will allow you to workout harder and hence push your muscle gain potential.

Thx wolfy poo, I always though it was eat the shake first then lose the carbs
yeah, thats a common misconception. The body will release glucose into your blood stream during exercise by metabolizing fats in your body, however this occurs through thremogenic processes and is not instant, hence the carbohydrate snack 20 mins before the workout. this gives you a starting point for your body to use for energy until the fats are released and metabolized.
your body continues burning fats and muscle tissue after a workout and if there are not enough stores of carbs and protein, the muscles will actually breakdown a little, causing shrinkage of the muscle fibers. This is why it is so important to have a carb and protein shake after a workout, as this provides the building blocks to build and repair the damage done to the muscles during a workout. Drinking a shake after a workout can not only allow you to increase muscle mass but it can also halve or even quarter your recovery time which means less soreness and stiffness and better results and definition and gains.

I’m bookmarking this. I’ve been taking GNC protein shakes and I bulked up with muscle but I also gained a little fat as well. Creotene and a harder work out schedule is next on the agenda.
Okay so went to a fitness center and talked to a muscle bound freak and gathered some really good info.
Anyhow, he recommended I take the creotene 1/2 hour BEFORE the workout and then drink the protein powder shake directly AFTER work out. That should feed your muscles the proper conditions/nutrients to grow instead of your body eating your muscles alive.
So I went and spent $100 freakin' bucks on the creotene (left} and Protein shake (right).
I tell you what, that crotene is like legal steroids. I tried it for the first time yesterday and I felt like f*cking superman on crack. I surpassed my number or reps by at least 40% more than what I could normally do. I feel great!
