First scan Superman clearly states he has a shield protecting him against magics. Sephiroth has dispel materia which breaks shields, barriers, ect. Shield materia actually makes a character invincible to magic and physical attacks. But dispel gets rid of it.

Second scan shows superman gaining knowledge of demonic magics and such. The magic Sephiroth uses would be natural magic and something he likely has absolutely no knowledge of. So he won’t really know how it works. Especially considering elemental magics call upon actual forces of nature. Bolt materia for example calls upon a real lightning bolt. Quake creates a real Earth quake.

Final scan focusing on mind control seems to point out that he needs something to believe in. He heard somebody’s voice and was able to grasp onto that to overcome it. When he’s alone and fighting only with himself can he still overcome it?

I know, but I was just explaining the kind of magic Superman is dealing with here. Materia in FF7 has a wide variety of effects.

Poisons
Slowing down or stopping a person
Berserking a person (making them attack wildly and without thought)
Paralysis
Petrification
Confusion (making them not know who is friend or foe, can even make them attack themselves)
Blindness

And all the elemental things, Fire, wind, water, ice, lightning, quakes, even flares.

It’s probably because he has become one with Jenova and the lifestream. He can control negative lifestream which instantly killed anything it touched in FF7.

doesn’t sephiroth have to aim those attacks?(referring to the AC battle scene). beserk is just another form of mind control and superman deals with poisnus radiations on a regular bases.(UV rays). confusion is the same as mental attack.
