I don’t think the book was really based on an esotoric sybolic meanings if i read you correctly, rather on how easy the trappings or values of so called 'civilisation' disappear when men are under strain/without exterior 'authority', similar maybe, to what happened in the U.S after Hurricane Katrina. William Golding wrote expertly , i think, on the ugly side to human 'nature' and the flimsy layer of 'civilised' behaviour and what lies beneath, in his excellent 'To The Ends Of The Earth'.
