Who said that rockers always write the most poetic, intelligent lyrics? Maybe somebody did i don’t know i am not looking back to check. Some rock lyrics are horrible. Look at how famous ACDC is and they have always wrote shitty lyrics A lot of bands do write awful lyrics but on average, rock lyrics are more intelligent than rap lyrics. Some rock bands write absolutely amazing lyrics on top of incredible instrumental skill.

I’m not saying ACDC doesn’t have entertaining lyrics, it’s just that they are not really very thoughtful.

But today’s metal often has crappy and/or unintelli-
gible lyrics. At least you can understand AC/DC,Sab-
bath,Metallica,Judas Priest, etc. And why is there SO
MUCH acoustic guitar, even in heavy metal???????????

Modern metal does contain its share of bad lyrics but older metal does as well. Metallica actually has often written very good lyrics. I guess i should say James Hetfield writes very good lyrics because on the most recent album the entire band contributed and the lyrics were not as good as their past releases. In Flames and Opeth are two modern bands that you would consider to have unintelligible vocals but their lyrics are quite intelligent. Especially Opeth. Metal from nearly any era contains its terrible lyrics and great ones. I personally don’thave a problem with acousitc guitar and i don’t think it is out of place in metal though i am not quite sure what exactly you mean by that question. I metioned Opeth earlier and they are probably one of the most brilliant bands in modern music.

Rock, especially metal,is supposed to be about great
guitar solos.You don’t hear many in today’s rock,and
that acoustic reminds me of pop.I can’t wait for the
next great guitarist to hit the scene and revive me-
tal!!!!

Ok first off, to the guy that just said “Rock is just banging your instrument and making up songs” You couldn’t be more wrong,
first off learning to play and instrument, and playing it well takes a very long time and a lot of skill. (oddly enough as i wrote that eruption came on it’s a song by van halen for those who don’t know deffiantly one of the most popular guitar solos)
Second point i wanted to make musicians who play rock don’t “make up” the songs. Much of it comes from there lives or are related to something significant to them (in my opinion Kurt Cobain is a genious at song writing.) There is no way to say what is “better” Rap or Rock since its all a matter of opinion.

To me, I find rap very annoying, any time I turn on the tv and see mtv its some rapper whos only going to be famous for a few more days and some girl next to him half naked shaking her ass; its all very cliche` and boring.

also... I agree metal is in a slump right now, all modern day metal bands are just terrible... well the mainstream ones (ie. Slipknot, Korn, Mudvayne, ect.) In my opinion MTV has ruined music through over-exposure and feeding shit to the masses

Mudvayne, Slpiknot and Korn are examples of Nu-Metal bands. There are so many different sub-genres of metal that you just have to look deeper. You are not going to find the next kickass metal band on MTV or VH1. There is absolutely no chance, don’t even try. There are brilliant metal bands out there right now. Samwise is correct and i believe somebody else mentioned them a ways back, Opeth is an amazing band but if you are looking for clean vocals then you are going to have to make an adjustment. Opeth actually does go back and forth between heavy music with death vocals and nice melodic acoustic parts with very nice vocals. Children of Bodom is another great band with amazing solos so there you are Cowboy but i am not sure if they are really what you are looking for.

Just out of curiousity, do any of the “rock” people in this topic have any idea where rock came from or even the name?

The “ghettos of the world” have always produced the next thing. Most great art stems from suffering and struggle, be it financial, mental, skin color, etc.
It’s a shame, these cultural divides exist, and ignorance is as rampant as ever. But, here we are.

Someone mentioned, that rap artists are making six and seven figures a year still rapping about struggle. Well, why are the six figure earning families have kids buying the music?

The truth is that they (rappers) do what they do, like any rock band that puts out the same damn album every year with a different title and cover. Capitolism. There is no coorelation between talent and success and that is the only thing that is real.

peace. seriously

"Just out of curiousity, do any of the “rock” people in this topic have any idea where rock came from or even the name?"

ya know, in general I’m really quite sick of this, yes to some extent it did influnce the rock music we have today. But so did every other band from the 1950s till now. You could trace it back as much as you want. This does however, prove your argument about how “ignorance is as rampant as ever” quite well.

“Someone mentioned, that rap artists are making six and seven figures a year still rapping about struggle. Well, why are the six figure earning families have kids buying the music?"

Why you ask that their kids are buying these albums? Well my friend, because MTV told them to. Yes MTV, the epidemy of mass marketing; dosn’t matter if your talented or not if MTV says your good, then you are. Same thing when you said....

“The truth is that they (rappers) do what they do, like any rock band that puts out the same damn album every year with a different title and cover. Capitolism. There is no coorelation between talent and success and that is the only thing that is real."

Yep... very true, the bands that have no talent don’t have to put forth anything that could be deemed creative or require any work. I know this might seem hard to imagine... but there are, some bands, that... WRITE MUSIC BECAUSE THEY LOVE MUSIC! *gasp* I know its a shock, but some artists love to write music, take for example the indie/alternative rock that surfaced in the early 90s in seattle, they were very unknown, until Kurt Cobain signed on with Geffen hopeing to bring some of these talented unknown bands into the spot light. And that he did, not knowing that MTV saw this as a major cash cow. But unlike many of the popular untalented bands of today, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, ect. kept making good music, why? because they did it for themselves and no one else. Unfortunatly it all ended when Kurt died... take away the art and all you have left is shit, marketed by MTV as music for their own selfish gain.
