rap takes a lot more skill than you think, anyone can be taught to play the guitar, writing music of course takes alent, but other than that nothing really

True, anyone can be taught to play the guitar, but it takes years of practice to be as good as some of the rock greats. I wrote better poetry in 3rd grade than most mainstream rap artists do today. Im sure that rap takes a bit of practice to get right, but comparing it with learning to play the guitar is just fucking stupid.

I remember going to parties in the early '80s when all this rap bullshit really took off. We’d stand by the keg watching the jocks and preps and other image-conscious extra-white dildos dance around spastically to Blondie’s intonations about how “the man from mars was eatin' cars, no wait he’s eatin' bars. . ."

Yep, it was ALWAYS a struggle between free beer and how much shitty music we could stand to listen to. In the end, we’d heist as much beer as we could and put on some Judas Priest. Or as The Sugar Hill Gang would put it: “A rip rop rippidy doo."

Since then both rap and rock have evolved. Rap was actually pretty good there for a few years with GROUPS like NWA, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill. There was actually some popular rap with positive messages and humor like Digital Underground and Arrested Development.

Rock morphed into “grunge” about the same time. Ever since then there have been uncountable Eddie Vedder clone bands on the radio, long after Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder have ceased to be relevant.

I guess the point I’d like to make is that mainstream ANYTHING sucks goat balls anymore. If you hear it on the radio it has a 97% probability of sucking.

Mainstream rock sucks. Mainstream rap sucks. The solution is to dig a little deeper. If you’re a rap-head, dig into the past. I may not be a big fan of rap, but even I can see that the pioneering rap acts were 100 times more insightful than the current MTV crop of ambulatory meat-wads with microphones.

The same sort of situation applies to rock. Aside from a few bands who’ve been around for 20+ years, most rock on the radio is as insipid as the rap.

For me, the solution is METAL. Death, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Dying Fetus, Sepultura, Megadeth, Entombed, Emperor, Dissection, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Opeth, Exhorder, Fight, Amorphis and Necrophagist are all superb.

If you like guitar, bass and drums and you’ve already heard enough lyrics in your life to have reached the point where everytime you hear about how “hard” someone’s had it, or how some asshole got his heart broken, your only response is “I don’t give a fuck. I’ve got my own hardships and heartbreaks to deal with," then a little metal might do you some good.

RAP IS THE GREATEST THING EVER IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD. Rap takes some talent, but rock does take more talent with the instruments and stuff. But rap has the better beats, and different sounds, and the music has a better flow since it all rythms!~ Rock takes more talent, but rap still needs talent to get good and go to the top of the charts! I mean like Twister got talent with that rap! I’m out but RAP IS THE BEST FROM EAST TO WEST!!!~!!!

Anyone can be taught to play guitar, it takes someone with real talent, to master the guitar.

As for song writing: are you a dumbass? All rock songs have lyrics dude. So here’s where the genres stand:

rap: writes songs, speak in rhythm

rock: learn guitar, master guitar, write song, learn to play song, time your playing with other band-mates, sing song

Anyone can be taught to play guitar. Just like anyone can be taught to draw. If they get past the stick figure, and develop their own style, then they’re an artist.

yes, rap takes some talent to learn the lyrics and all,and the beat is cool, but i wish the rap songs would talk about something other than money or girls....we get it already.

rock takes a lot of talent...have you heard the guitar solo in free bird....have you heard eric johnson, eric clapton, lynard skynyrd, led zepplin-STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, rush, metallica, killswitch engage,bush-GLYCERINE,or deftones?....their lyrics have meaning. you actually have to think about stuff and a lot of the meanings are hidden.

im not sure i belive that everyone can master the guitar, u can learn it, but i think there is just pure talent in mastering it.

Yo, to those who say rap takes no talent, read this:

source: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/showthread.php?t=41763

Common Myth 1: Rap requires no talent. All rappers are unskilled and it takes nothing to do the music

Truth of the matter: You can never truely judge the difficulty of something until you try it. You can sit there and analyze it and judge it based on your own logic, but until you try it, you’re judgements are mostly without proof. I myself didin’t think that rapping would be something as hard as it was when I first began recording, but soon after working on my first song, I realized that I was getting into something that would require me to put in more work than I expected.

To judge the difficulty of a rapper’s job without actually rapping yourself, you have to take alot of things into consideration. First, you have to look at the formal structure of a rap song. Basic rap songs, differing from rock, require more original line of lyrics. A basic rap song is 48 original lines, 16 lines per verse and 3 verses. Rappers most often don’t rely on long hooks and repeated lines like most rock or pop artist do, rather, they
have the difficult task of comming up with 16 lines a verse that have to have some kind of association with the message of the song. Now, you make think, 16 lines a verse, ohh that’s easy; well, you’re very, very wrong if you think that. Consider that with each line, the rapper is flowing to a beat and that each line not only has to be in synch with the last one but it also has to fit the rhythm of the instrumental. Add onto the fact that in trying to fit the lines with the rhythm of the instrumental, a rapper sometimes has to cut some words out of a line in order to make it flow smoother. This becomes a problem for a rapper, because in cutting some words out, it becomes harder to convey the point you want to make exactly like you want to make it. Rap, song writing is a very constraining thing because of all the limits put on each line. I’ve just started writing short stories, and believe me when I say it’s a much more fun experience.

That’s just the writing part of rap and a little on the flowing aspect of it. Now, lets go in depth on the flow of rap. Consider what I said about 16 lines a verse with a hook comming afterwards. Consider that when rapping for a period of time you lose alot of breath. And consider that you’ll have to flow each line in the rhymth of the beat while keeping your breath control in order, and there should not be any doubt of the difficulty of recording a rap song. Believe me, I’ve seen how difficult of a time that alot of rappers have in recording. Often, I’ve been in the studio rapping or recording someone rapping only to have us do over 30-50 takes. 30-50 takes you say? Rediculous, right? Well try what I just said, try rapping a verse with 16 lines one comming after the other, non stop, and try not running out of breath or stumbling on one letter or word out of the 48 lines of your song. It’s just one letter, one tiny mistake that it takes to destroy your whole verse and make you press the stop button. Think of how exhausted your brain and vocal cords can become when exerting yourself for that amount of time. I’ve seen guys give up on a song, throwing it in the trash bin for another day of recording. Added to the flow is the element of mic presence and emotion. Alot of times, a rapper will nail the flow of their verse but they’ll often have to redo it because they didn’t put forth enough emotion on a certain part or because they did not maintain the proper level of voice that’s needed to limit the work on the eq editing phase.

TRUTH OF THE MATTER- You have to be a pretty talented performer to nail all these aspects of the rap song. I challenge non-believers and detractors to try rapping sometime. Download the cooledit recording program and go pick up a ten dollar microphone from your local pc store — that should be all you need to make an amateur rap production. Try making a rap song and posting it on the audio forum of any respectable rap forum — never urbanflows, they suck — and see all the nit picking from your performance that you’ll get. You may get dismayed from it, but that should show you just how serious rappers are about their craft. It’s not as easy as you may think. Saying this, anyone can rap just like anyone can do just about anything, but not everyone can make a decent rap song.

Common Myth 2: Rap is all about hoes, guns, and how much money you have, it’s all bad.

TRUTH OF THE MATTER: This is far from the truth. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that these things don’t exist in rap, because they do, what I’ll say, though, is show me one thing in the world that’s all good. There is nothing in the universe, expect god, that’s without its goods and bads. Rap is no different. While there are songs about hoes and shooting people in rap, there are also equal number of positive songs out there in the music. I think it’s very ignorant to judge a whole genre based on a few songs that you’ve heard. I say go out and expand your horizons on anything before you judge it based on limited knowledge, because if you don’t, you’ll be missing out on something that you may even come to like.

Difference Between Rap and Rock:

Rap:

Difficulty: Extremely easy -> Hard (Some hiphop drummers have Jazz influence)
Age range: Young -> 30’s (You don’t see some middle aged man or senior rapping)
Variety: HipHop, TripHop, Gangsta, etc...
Race Range: All Races
Instruments involved: Drum Machines, Vocorders, Synthesizers, vocals, the odd guitar, etc...
# of Band Members: 1 -> Very few (on average)

Rock:

Difficulty: Simple -> Extremely Difficult
Age range: Any Age/ Very Diverse
Variety: Acid, Hard, Blues, Rock n' Roll, Metal, Jazz Rock, etc...
Race Range: All Races (Less race discrimination in Rock)
Instruments involved: Practically all instruments but mainly Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, and Synthesizer.
# of Band Members: 1 -> Alot (see “Supertramp”wink

I’m not fond of Rap myself because of mass stereotyping and discrimination (which is less appearant in rock). I’m not saying Rap is untalented though. Some Rap artists have amazing drummers with Jazz skills, which is the most structured music alive, and even pretty good guitarists. Age discrimination and the way you look is a big factor to both genres, so you can’t argue or you would be contradicting yourself.

Pound for Pound, Rock Takes much more talent than the average rap song, but your votes are based on preferences.

The world accepts both as musical genres.

My vote’s for Rock. (Long Live Rush, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Supertramp, the Beatles, the Trews, Led Zeppelin, John Petrucchi, and all the rockers out there)

I like any genre of music that doen’t suck. Comapring 2 genres shows your lack of musical knowledge. There are many more genres out there, quit limiting yourself to 2 mainstream genres of music that are going on a long pitfall into musical obscurity due to the lure of fame and wealth, rather than talent and skill.
