I think I have fixed the issue now.
The bug is to be found in the difference between image uploading in Firefox and Internet Explorer (which is as usual not following the standards). It should work, for all alowed image types, with both browsers now (the script no longer 'trusts' what the browser tells it about the uploaded file).
