That’s not the point. Fact is, Elvis is making more money while he’s dead than any rapper ever has. No matter what the cause, it’s still happening. DOn’t like it? TOo bad, rock is still winning.

u know why hes making money? because hes a first, hes a legend, hes an antique. u know why he was so popular? he appeared when color tv was invented!
u think all the money hes making are from his albums? no. theyre from his antique guitars and copyright shit.
u think todays teenagers listen to his shit? fuck no! only wrinkled, diabetic, senior citizens listen to him.

and the bottom line is, its not about the money, man, its about the popularity. go to mtv, u see elvis? i thought so.

and i dont need my own bitch to say hands down, cuz yall know it.

Personally I don’t listen to Presley often. I do find his music good. He is what he is, and that is the king of Rock and Roll. I respect Elvis for what he did to the music industry. I have come to the realisation that if Elvis had never been, the the music I listen too (60/70’s progressive rock bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin) would not be here today. And I hate to break it too all you Rap fans but If it weren’t for Elvis Presley, Rap itself would not exist. You can bitch and wine all you want to about Rock and Roll, but even for Rap you have to know your heritage.

Dear God,

Well way to compare apples and oranges, regardless of my personal oppinion, i will be unbiased. I say that both genres have adroit and capable musicians. I will say that punk rock shows are a hell of a lot more energetic than any hip hop show that I have ever been to and that alone ought to be reason enough for those of you narrow minded sycophants with hermetically sealed music tastes to check out a southern california punk show. Besides the painfully brazen fact that mainstream hip-hop condones a hedonistic, matterialistic lifestyle, The lack of variation in both the musical and lyrical realms compounded by the excessive use of poor english makes me yearn for the next immortal technique album.

to summarize, Music now days needs a kick in the ass we don’t need another generation of Mtv indoctrinated asshats with an inveterate impulse to grab thier genitals and speak in broken english.

open your ears and hear the very disparate musical vocabulary you’ll be better for it.

Regarding language,

language is useful as long as I dont need a huge dick of a lexicon of “urban” slang rammed mercillessly into my ear to understand it.

an absolutley agregious prospect for someone like myself who is educated in proper linguistics.

and popularity is epemeral,

look for quality not quantity don’t accept banality.

To original Poster,

I wasn’t aware that one musical genre could “rape” another

where are the statutes for what constitutes musical rape because I would love to give them a good read.

you dolt.

u know what? ima be honest, u really got me intimidated with all those long ass words. i had to sit back and wonder what all that bullshit meant.

about quality, do i have to tell u that quality for u might be shit for others?

languages. ur too tight on that “linguistic” shit, man, loosen up a bit. and u may not understand urban slang but then again many pple also have trouble understanding senseless screaming. also “urban” slang is equal to “red neck” or “surfer dude” accent.

and about music genres “raping” other music genres, havent u pple ever heard of a figure of speech? “shut up”, “kick back”, “hang out”, “kick ass”?

My rebuttle,

Quality is a constanat, not a variable, and can be measured through musical complexity lyrical quality (which is where underground hip hop typically takes the cake), and of course a third obvious yet difficult to describe facet of the music I will refer to henceforth as “catchy”

now, if you think modern “rock and roll” (to use a trite blanket terminology) consists of simple screaming and “red neck” southern drawl you are looking in the wrong place.

exhibit A: Bad Religion

probibly my favorite band of all time and one of the more erudite lryically. these are the lyrics to a song of theirs called stranger than fiction.

A febrile shocking violent smack &
The children are hoping for a heart attack,
Tonight the windows are watching,
The streets all conspire,
And the lamppost can’t stop crying,
If I could fly high above the world,
Would I see a bunch of living dots spell the world stupidity? ,
Or would I see hungry lover homicides,
Loving brother suicides,
And olly olly oxenfrees,
Who pick a side and hide

The world is scratching at my door,
My morning paper’s got the scores,
The human interest stories, and the obituary

Cockroach naps and rattling traps,
How many devils can you fit upon a match head? ,
Caringosity* killed the kerouac cat,
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction

In my alley around the corner,
There’s a wino with feathered shoulders,
And a spirit giving head for crack and he’ll never want it back,
There’s a little kid and his family eating crackers like thanksgiving
And a pack of wild desperados scornful of living

The worlds is scratching at my door....

Cradle for a cat, wolfe looks back,
How many angels can you fit upon a match?
I want to know why hemingway cracked,
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction

Life is the crummiest book I ever read,
There isn’t a hook, just a lot of cheap shots,
Pictures to shock and characters an amateur would never dream up

*the word caringosity is a neology, used to make a pun. In other words I can interperet language that isn’t necessarily proper english but then again it isn’t recapitulated ad infinitum either
e.g. “nigga”

more defense to follow

more on “catchy”

A great deal of “catchy” depends on how the musical beats and notes matematically fit together for the same reason that a four beat or six beat scale sounds good only a small marginal part of this is subject to the afore mentioned Oppinion factor. however whether one person likes it or not does not good music make.

for instance I hate the dashboard confessional, but i can see why other people like it it is mathematically sound and obeys musical rules. So therefore popularity has little if nothing to do with what makes music good. Its formulaic Good music is objective.
