The Game Arrested In LA Suburb
By Nolan Strong and Roman Wolfe
Date: 5/23/2006 5:38 pm

Rapper The Game was arrested this past Saturday (May 20) in Burbank, Calif., and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon after police pulled his vehicle over in the suburb of Los Angeles.

The Compton, California-bred rapper, born Jayceon Taylor, was detained around 9 p.m.

Sources told AllHipHop.com that Game was pulled over for having no license plate on his 2006 Bentley and having a tint on his windows that was too dark.

While police did not confirm why the rapper was initially stopped, Lt. Puglisi of the Burbank Police Department did confirm that Game was arrested, charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, and released on $20,000 bail.

Sources also told AllHipHop.com that police found a set of brass knuckles in the rapper’s car, resulting in his arrest and his vehicle being impounded.

Representatives for The Game did not comment.

The feud between Bow Wow and Lil' Romeo has intensified, as Bow Wow has responded to comments Master P made surrounding the two rappers' growing beef.

Lil' Romeo’s father, Master P, confirmed that the two rappers had crossed paths backstage at Nickelodeon’s Kids' Choice Award show, on April 1st.

According to Master P, Bow Wow ran in his trailer and refused to talk about tensions with Lil' Romeo.

Now, Bow Wow has come forward to address Master P and Lil' Romeo.

“I can’t understand all this, but I guess that’s how it is when you ain’t getting no attention," Bow Wow told AllHipHop.com. “You can hear me on the radio all day, every day. You [Lil' Romeo] can’t sell no records, and your daddy is on Dancing With the Stars."

Lil' Romeo was apparently offended at the line on the song “Fresh Azimiz," where Bow Wow claimed to be making more money than an unspecified person’s father.

Romeo released a diss to Bow Wow titled, “Hood Stars." Master P also accused Bow Wow’s success of going to the rapper’s head.

“I just think Bow Wow done sold a couple records and got real cocky, and forgot where he came from," Master P said in a previous interview.

Bow Wow dismissed Master P’s allegations.

“The crazy part is the line that got them all bent outta shape was an old LL line (“The Do Wop from LL Cool J’s 1987 album Bigger and Deffer). That shows how much they know about Hip-Hop."

Bow Wow also countered Master P’s challenge to a Pay-Per-View boxing match between Romeo and Bow Wow.

“If Romeo wanna make some real money, come sign with me," Bow Wow said. “Then, he wouldn’t have to pull these stunts 'cause there ain’t No Limit over here."

Christina Milian Dropped from Def Jam
Posted by Shlo on 06/08/2006
Christina Milian has been dropped from Def Jam’s roster. Although no reason was given, it seems obvious that her lack of sales prompted the move. Despite a hit record and an album in stores, Def Jam didn’t feel the need to keep her on board. Her last album only sold 382,000 copies despite a top 5 hit (Dip It Low). Her current album only debuted at #11, and probably won’t even match her last album sales. Def Jam figured Ms. Milian to be expendable, especially after the emergence of Rihanna, who currently has two hit songs on both the Billboards and iTunes.

One would think that Nick Cannon would be laughing (one of her album’s songs is a Nick Cannon diss track), but I forgot he doesnt have a record deal either. At least not a real one.

Loon Airs Out Mase and Jay-Z
Posted by Shlo on 06/04/2006
Loon has more to say about his Mase beef, and did so in a new video currently circulating through the web. Loon criticizes Mase for claiming to write Big L’s lyrics, and tells him to focus on his petty beef with Jim Jones. Loon and Mase had traded diss tracks a few months ago. Mase has since gotten involved with Jim Jones, Duke Da God, and Fabolous.
In another segment of the video, Loon says he was not impressed by Jay-Z’s I Declare War concert. “I went to the little Jay-Z concert, little kiss and make up concert. I ain’t even lying to you. I was not feeling it. Give some of them young, hungry niggas a chance Hov, for real. All them niggas you brought out...most of them niggas been exposed. Niggas done seen Nas' insides and all that. Niggas done seen his ass and all that. It’s cool that ya’ll niggas made peace and all that, but let that nigga float."

Cam’ron Responds to Jay-Z Diss
Posted by Shlo on 05/31/2006
Cam’ron has responded to Jay-Z with another diss track over the popular Yung Joc song It’s Going Down. In the track, Cam tells Hova to get off of Jeezy’s dick and Rick Ross' shit. He also claims that Jay only goes back to his hometown Marcy projects for Christmas. Cam’ron started the beef with the two tracks Swagger Jacker and You Got It. Jay finally responded on the remix of Rick Ross' Hustlin.

Dre and Raekwon had worked together on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, which was spearheaded by Busta Rhymes. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II will be co-produced by Aftermath and Wu Tang. RZA has yet to comment on the situation.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, Brookyln rap icon Jay-Z will take the stage June 25 for a one-night only concert at New’s York’s Radio City Music Hall.

The Def Jam Recordings President will perform songs from the album in their entirety.

The concert marks a milestone for Jay-Z, who was recently named “The Greatest MC of All Time” in a recent MTV news survey.

The rapper, born Shawn Carter, struggled to get a record deal a decade ago as his first release was introduced as a bootlegged cassette tape that made its way around New York’s hip-hop community.

The resistance from record labels resulted in the creation of Roc-A-Fella Records and the official release of Reasonable Doubt on June 25, 1996.

Since then, Jay-Z has sold more than 40 million albums, won numerous awards and branched out beyond the rap arena to become the founder and chairman of Rocawear, co-owner of the New Jersey Nets, and co-owner of Carol’s Daughter, a skin care and beauty line.

The wordsmith, who became the first non-athlete to enter into a major footwear co-venture with his S. Carter line for Reebok, also found a vehicle for philanthropic work with his Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation.

A limited number of tickets for the show will go on sale at 9 a.m. est Friday (June 9) exclusively through Ticketmaster.

With Mase supposedly finding the “murder” back in his name with his possible signing to G-Unit, it seems as if he is ready to take a cue from his new family and start up some beef. Even though Mase is a former Bad Boy, it looks like he is ready to fire up some tension with another rapper whose style can be compared to his.

Loon is the reported recipient of Mase’s venom as Loon expressed on Hot 97. According to MTV, when asked about his feelings about the former Bad Boy signing to G-Unit, Loon responded…

“I was basically like, 'That’s my dude, but if dude feels G-Unit can save him from ridicule — which can definitely be a reality in the future — good luck,'" he explained.

He seemed surprised that Mase would dis him…

“I was like, 'What?'” he said. “This is a dude that knows better. Maybe with new company around, he got some new jolts of courage."

So the question is when and how will Loon respond?

After The Notorious B.I.G’s family lost the rapper to a fatal shooting in Los Angeles, the case remained unsolved. With the help of detectives and experts, the family believed the case was unsolved due to a variety of cover ups and corruption within the Los Angeles Police Department.

In the wake of the tragedy, the family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles. During the trial, Big’s family claimed they received an anonymous tip about two former police officers who were connected to the murder.

The two officers mentioned were Rafael Perez and David Mack. When the judge found that the police detectives hid information from LAPD interviews with an informant intentionally, he quickly declared a mistrial. Big’s family was rewarded $1.1 million for expenses.

However, the end has not come as of yet.

Last month, a city attorney told Judge Florence Marie-Cooper that the family lied during the trial when they claimed detectives withheld information about the informant’s report. A private investigator noted that the plaintiffs knew about the remarks from the informant as far back as 2002. Big’s family’s attorney Perry Sanders also spoke about the matter.

He claims that he realized the defense team had been previously contacted about the information only after declaring he knew nothing about the informant. He also denied ever misleading the judge or the court on purpose. He added that he gave the proper information about the informant’s report on two occasions, once in 2002 and later in 2005.

Dorthy Wolpert, a lawyer who has been hired by the city of Los Angeles advised the Judge to re-open the trial as soon as possible

This year, classic performances seemed more likely because Sunday’s headliners at Giants Stadium — Mary J. Blige and Busta Rhymes — really have no rap beef to speak of. Neither do Jermaine Dupri, Dem Franchize Boyz, Sean Paul, Three 6 Mafia, Remy Ma, T.I., Ne-Yo, Chris Brown or Young Jeezy. The only ones who could have used the infamous Summer Jam screen (which artists use to put their rivals on blast) are the Diplomats, who make their disdain for Jay-Z very public.

Last year the Dips were given a very unceremonious second-performance slot during the show. That means that as people were still filing in — many with their hearts set on seeing Cam’ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones and crew — the group was finishing a brief performance. This year, Hot 97 tried to make amends by letting the Dips go on last.

(Click for photos from this year’s Summer Jam.)

When Summer Jam’s last acts hit the stage in past years (Eminem, R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg), a large portion of the crowd was either in the parking lot or on the New Jersey turnpike heading home. Not this year.

As the Dips hit the stage Sunday night, one big question hung over the crowd: Would Cam’ron, who just a few days ago released a dis track aimed at Hov, strike on a major stage? Nope. Cam & Co. didn’t even mention Jay’s name. The Diplomats started with Juelz Santana and Jim Jones, who performed the street anthems “G’s Up," “Oh Yes” and “There It Go."

The Dip family had a good 50 people onstage, looking almost as deep as the crowd that paid to see them. Cam was introduced to a thunderous roar, coming on with “I Really Mean It” and later carrying the momentum to “Wet Wipes."

Busta Rhymes' set came right before the Dips', and he got the crowd laughing when he entered the stage wearing Jeremy Shockey’s New York Giants jersey with shoulder pads and a helmet. Bust did get love, but he probably would have been able to maintain frenzied feedback throughout his set if he would have stuck with his earlier catalog rather than newer Big Bang songs like “Get You Some” and “In the Ghetto." The MC told the audience that it may not know his new material but will learn it by the time he rocks the next Summer Jam.

Busta paraded out several legends toward the end of his set, including the Wu-Tang Clan for “Triumph” and Rakim for “Eric B. Is President." Not to be outdone, Big Daddy Kane came out for “Warm It Up, Kane." The guests didn’t end there: Slick Rick came out for “Children’s Story," Q-Tip followed for “Scenario," and the set closed with Busta and Swizz Beatz performing “New York Sh — " with all the legends onstage.

But Jermaine Dupri got the award for the most stunting with guest appearances on Sunday. Not only did JD bring out his girlfriend, Janet Jackson, during his set with Dem Franchize Boyz (Janet kissed him on the lips before walking off and waving to the crowd), but he also invited Mariah Carey. For some reason, MC could not sing, but they played “We Belong Together," and the crowd sang along. Mariah mimed the words and waved the crowd as well.

T.I.'s show was basically an abbreviated version of the concert he gave at the Apollo a few days earlier (see “T.I. Mixes Party Anthems, Tribute To Late Friend At NYC Show”wink, but when he was getting ready to give the fans his biggest hit, “What You Know About That," his mic was cut. Just like Young Jeezy earlier in the night as he was getting into “Go Crazy," Tip apparently ran out of his allotted time.

The audience began to boo — not at Tip, but at Hot 97. The crowd had stood patiently through the rain and paid more than $100 per ticket, and T.I. had flown into Jersey that same morning after being in L.A. for the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday.

Jamie Foxx, who sang “Live in the Sky” with T.I., had his own surprise guest: LL Cool J. LL came out, and he and Foxx acknowledged that they used to have beef, but all is settled. “All I ever wanted to be was your hype man," Foxx told LL.

Still, Summer Jam was missing that one monumental Summer Jam moment. With no Jay, no 50, no Nas, there was no one who really left the stage in shambles.

SHOULD T.I BE THE #1 RAPPER?

“I have mixed feelings, because I feel like I should have been here when I dropped my first album," he said recently. “I feel I should have been right here in this position. I feel like I should have had Nelly’s or 50’s career. I should have dropped and debuted #1 and went hard from the top. But God don’t make mistakes, and I don’t regret none of the things I went through."

The next single from King is going to be “Why You Wanna," which, as dance-music enthusiasts will recognize, uses a sample from Crystal Waters' hit “Gypsy Woman."

“I will not tell a lie, I cannot take any credit for that sample," he explained. “Kato, a Grand Hustle producer, he came in and gave me the track. I didn’t know what the sample was from. I think [my publicist] was like, 'That’s from a old song.' Then when people started singing it, I was like, 'I remember that.' I like the response from that song, that’s a definite bond with the ladies I haven’t had."

THATS ALL FOR TONIGHT FOLKZ

Deadly Shooting Causes T.I. To Re-Evaluate His Life
05.09.2006

Rapper describes how he tried to comfort his dying friend following attack.
Philant Johnson and T.I.

The slaying last week of his personal assistant and lifelong friend Philant Johnson has forced T.I. to re-evaluate his life and career, the rapper told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in his first interview since the incident.

Still

“I’m kind of like watching my life change right before my eyes. I’m figuring out whether or not I even want to keep doing this [stuff] right now. I don’t know." — T.I.

shaken from the hail of bullets that killed Johnson on Wednesday after an altercation at a Cincinnati nightclub spilled onto the streets (see “Police ID Man Killed In Shootout Involving T.I.'s Crew”wink, T.I. said he’ll never forget the final moments of his friend’s life. “I told him that I had him and it was going to be all right," the rapper, born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., told his hometown paper. “That was what I said. And he said, 'All right.' "

A few hours later, Johnson died.

“I’m kind of like watching my life change right before my eyes. I’m figuring out whether or not I even want to keep doing this [stuff] right now. I don’t know," said T.I., who spoke at Johnson’s funeral on Monday at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church in Atlanta.

The paper reported a heavy police presence as the funeral began Monday afternoon. Photos of Johnson ringed his open casket as guests began to arrive, including former “American Idol” singer Kinnik Sky, who sang at the service.

According to the Journal-Constitution, T.I. stumbled over his words as he stood over Johnson’s midnight-blue casket and tried to describe losing his best friend while giving a eulogy. “I spend a lot of time holding the microphone and performing," T.I. said from the church’s pulpit. “But I ain’t never did nothing quite this hard. ... For my partner, I ain’t even going to focus on no negativity. ... Family forever, and I love you."

The funeral was also attended by Atlanta rappers Killer Mike and Yung Joc, as well as “ATL” director Chris Robinson. T.I. was among the pallbearers who helped lift Johnson’s casket onto a black horse-drawn carriage.

T.I. and Johnson had been friends since nursery school, according to the paper, and just hours before T.I. had tried to comfort his dying friend, Johnson, 26, had been standing beside the stage, holding the rapper’s phone as he performed at Bogart’s nightclub in Cincinnati.

“He loved music, always," said Johnson’s mother, Alicia Brown Cook. “And my son just told me two weeks ago ... he was like, 'Yeah, Mama, I love my job!' He was somewhere in Cali. Lying on the beach."

“It just seems like as long as I can remember, he was there," T.I. said of his friend. “As long as I can remember, his mama and my mama were partners. His cousin and my uncle were partners. His auntie and my grandmama stayed up the street from one another. And we just always knew each other, and it was cool."

The two often spent the night at each other’s houses as children, and in high school they engaged in the time-honored traditions of young men: video games, “tearing up stuff. Breaking windows. Throwing balls. Being somewhere they had no business. Or running in somebody’s yard. Just typical boys," Cook said.

T.I. told the Journal-Constitution he wasn’t sure what sparked the fight that led to Johnson’s death and the wounding of three other members of his crew. What is known is that after the show at Bogart’s, the group went to an afterparty across town at Club Ritz, where some in the crowd reportedly were angered by someone throwing money into the audience during a set by T.I. protégé Yung Joc.

As T.I. and his crew attempted to leave the party and avoid a scene, several people piled into SUVs and followed T.I.'s vans as they left the club. While T.I. told the paper that what happened isn’t even worth discussing, he did offer a snapshot of the incident.

As his van headed toward the highway, T.I. said, he was sitting in the back row on the driver’s side, Johnson in the row in front of him. When shots rang out, they hit Johnson and three others: Janice Gillespie, Ronald Hausley and Elijah Edwards. Once the van stopped on the highway, T.I. helped load his friend into another car that transported them to the hospital. Days after the incident, T.I. still had long, red scratches across the back of his left shoulder from the glass that shattered when it was hit by bullets.

“Man, we kind of thought we didn’t have to live like that no more. We thought that [stuff] was over for us," T.I. told the paper. Both men had overcome life on the streets and felt like life was changing at the time of the shooting, according to friends.

“I can honestly say in our last conversation, [Johnson] was like, 'Hannah, I’m so happy,' " said Hannah Kang, general manager of T.I.'s label, Grand Hustle Records. “He and his girl had just bought a house together. ... He was trying to get settled. Talking about working out. ... He was happy." The Monday before the shooting, both men had played a round of golf with Michael Jordan.

“I’m not ever going to be the same," T.I. told the paper. “Success isn’t measured in money. It’s measured in happiness. Peace. And I ain’t at peace right now. And I ain’t happy. My partner’s gone."

T.I. was scheduled to pick up his tour schedule again on Tuesday (May 9) in New Orleans following Johnson’s funeral, but the rapper said Friday he wasn’t sure if he could do that, and an Atlantic Records spokesperson could not be reached for clarification of the tour’s status.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be in New Orleans Tuesday," T.I. told the paper. “It’s hard to say. Because there are so many things that Philant would be doing that ain’t going to be able to be done now. I mean, Phil handled everything. ... He made sure the only thing I had to worry about was performing and handling the business. One of the worst parts is, at the end of the day, I’m responsible for everybody. Everybody entrusts their husbands, their sons, their daughters, their brothers, cousins, their best friends — everybody entrusts them to me. And it is my responsibility to ensure their safety and their safe return. And this is one time that I could not do that."

The shooting has caused the Cincinnati police to increase their uniformed and undercover patrols in the area around Club Ritz based on tips from local sources and officials in Atlanta that there may be some kind of violent retaliation in the works by people from Atlanta, according to a spokesperson for the Cincinnati Police Department. The spokesperson also said that officials have developed significant leads in the case but have not yet announced any arrests or people of interest. So far, there have been no retaliatory incidents that police know of.

10 Candidates For The Next 'Greatest MCs Of All Time' List
04.20.2006

With young talents like these on the rise, the future of hip-hop is bright indeed.
Lil' Wayne
Photo: Cash Money

When the MTV hip-hop brain trust reconvenes to reconsider “The Greatest MCs of All Time” five or 10 years from now, these MCs will definitely be in the running for the top 10.

MC: Ludacris
Selected Catalog: Back for the First Time (2000), Word of Mouf (2001), *Chicken-N-Beer (2003), The Red Light District (2004).
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: Bottom line, Cris is the most versatile MC in the rap game. He knows no bounds in his raps. The Mouth of the South can tantalize the shawties on love ballads with Usher, help Jamie Foxx maintain heavy airplay while boasting about being a sexual Superman, throw them 'bows on a crunk record, and still hang with the premier lyricists in the game like Nas and Jadakiss on posse cuts with his humorous metaphors and unblemished flow.

Forecast: With the mega radio hits showing no signs of stopping and movies now in his repertoire, Cris' already formidable star power is still on the rise. However, the South’s most consistent record seller is sometimes a victim of his own charisma: His party record hooks are so contagious and his videos so innovative that sometimes people forget about how nice he is on the mic. Later this year, Luda is dropping his Release Therapy LP, which should give a swift kick in the backside to anyone still sleeping on him.

MC: Kanye West
Selected Catalog: *The College Dropout (2004), *Late Registration (2005).
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: In five or 10 years, not only will we be talking about 'Ye as one of the best artists on the mic, but his invite to the producers hall of fame will have been signed, sealed and delivered. He very well could be giving the greatest beatmaker of all time — Dr. Dre — a serious run for his crown. As a rapper, Yeezee’s skills are improving every year — and politically, he just might be the most important voice in rap.

Forecast: Say all you want about West’s huge ego, that same ego was largely responsible for pushing him to deliver two classic LPs in two tries. That same ego is not going to let him put anything else out unless it’s going to be heralded across the board: If you listen to “Impossible," you’ll hear just how much he’s grown musically, as if he wasn’t already advanced enough. Kanye’s been experimenting with his flow, as well, and popping up on recent remixes with the likes of D-Block and Three 6 Mafia that are helping enforce his street cred.

MC: Lil' Wayne
Selected Catalog: #Get It How U Live! (1997), *#Guerrilla Warfare (1999), Tha Block Is Hot (1999), Lights Out (2000), 500 Degreez (2002), #Let 'Em Burn (2003), *Tha Carter (2004), *Tha Carter II (2005).
# = as a member of Hot Boys
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: After digesting the classic Tha Carter and its superior sequel, a lot of people down bottom and up top really believe Wayne’s self-proclaimed status as “the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired." Even if you don’t put him at number one, you can’t deny he’s in the top five — right now. His arsenal is stacked tight: endless lyrics, a flow that’ll make the competition vomit, proven pop and sex appeal, 'hood love and veteran status.

Jay? Nas? Biggie? Pac?
Our experts say Hov is king. Find out where your favorites rank and tell us what you think.

Forecast: He’s been making music for 10 years and he’s only 22 years old? You think LeBron James has a career ahead of him? Weezy is leading the pack of MCs under 25 — like Lloyd Banks, Cassidy and Juelz Santana — who are snatching the baton from the older cats. The future is here.

MC: The Game
Selected Catalog: *The Documentary (2005).
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: Sure, he only has one LP, but his mixtape circuit catalog constantly displays this Compton king is the truth.

Forecast: Game has been keeping his name out there recently with beef disses, but if he can stay away from feuds, he’s absolutely going to be one of the special artists down the road. And while 50 Cent’s hooks and Dr. Dre’s beats obviously helped him sell records the first time around, Compton’s bad boy has more than proved he can stand alone and shine. He’s thought-provoking, audacious and obviously has his metaphors ready.

MC: Beanie Sigel
Selected Catalog: The Truth (1999), The Reason (2001), *The B. Coming (2005).
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: He can be heartfelt, humorous and ruthless. Sig is one of the most believable rappers of the past 10 years, and verse-for-verse, he’s one of the most consistent.

Forecast: He may never give us a huge radio anthem, but that’s not what we love Sigel for. He comes with that true grit in his raps. He’s a street ambassador. Probably the only criticism Beans has received in his almost 10-year career is that he hasn’t dropped that game-changing classic LP yet — which is not to say that the best isn’t yet to come. His latest album, The B. Coming, was unequivocally timeless and his best work to date; it was just a little hard for him to push his product from behind prison bars. Now a free man with his batteries recharged, the Broad Street Bully has all the opportunity in the world to put the game under his thumb.

MC: Jadakiss
Selected Catalog: #Money, Power & Respect (1998), *#We Are the Streets (2000), Kiss Tha Game Goodbye (2001), Kiss of Death (2004).
# = as a member of the LOX
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: He’s not going to give you a million different flows, he’s not going to change his inflection up (he doesn’t need to: he has one of the most recognizable voices out there), but he will keep killing you with words. Jadakiss is at home on the throne. Lyrically Kiss' track record the past decade is so impeccable, he’s definitely the punch-line king.

Forecast: Coming from two dynasties like Bad Boy (circa 1994-98) and Ruff Ryders (circa 1999-2001), Kiss and the LOX have had no problem putting New York in a chokehold with their own D-Block movement. As a soloist, Kiss was certified gold last time out and had his biggest radio hit with “Why." So where does he go from here? Jada has to keep his momentum going with joints that can reach beyond the 'hood.

MC: 50 Cent
Selected Catalog: *Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2003), #Beg for Mercy (2003), The Massacre (2005), Music From and Inspired by Get Rich or Die Tryin': The Motion Picture (2005).
# = with G-Unit
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: He doesn’t make too many friends, but man, does 50 know how to make hit records. Whether he’s dropping platinum bangers on his own or lending his talents to other artists, Fif has proven to be the most consistent hitmaker in rap today. Since 2002, Mr. Moneybags has had one of this decade’s most impactful albums, led one of rap’s strongest crews and revolutionized the mixtape game.

The Great Debate
MTV’s hip-hop brain trust battles over the Greatest MCs of All Time. Watch as this melee gets as heated as a lyrical throwdown.

Forecast: Let’s face it, 50 is going to have at least two more multiplatinum albums before he hangs up his mic. Commercially speaking, it doesn’t seem like there’s any new ground for him to break. He’s had the million-selling first week, he’s had the album that was the soundtrack to a nation and sold 10 million copies. 50’s greatest success is looking like it will probably be on the business side. Apart from Eminem (who signed 50) and Jay-Z (whose Def Jam-owned Roc-A-Fella Records maintains Kanye West on the roster), none of the artists on our “Greatest MCs of All Time” list has been able to introduce a multiplatinum artist. 50’s already done that with Dr. Dre for Game — and with Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Mobb Deep and quite possibly Mase signed to his label, the Queens general seems destined to live lavishly as an executive for a long time to come.

MC: T.I.
Selected Catalog: I’m Serious (2001), *Trap Muzik (2003), *Urban Legend (2004), King (2006).
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: King is proving to be Tip’s breakout LP, solidifying the King of the South’s top position in all regions. He’s finally crossed over into that rare breed of hip-hop pop star like Jay-Z, who is just as loved in the trap as he is on the airwaves and record stores. And the swagger is unimpeachable.

Forecast: Tip feels he should have been a major top dog from the inception of his career, but timing is everything. Now that he’s affirmed his artistry in the music biz, he doesn’t have to worry when he divvies up his time in Tinsletown. That, too, is proving fruitful, his Hollywood bow in “ATL” was critically acclaimed. The future for Tip is definitely looking it will be the best of both worlds.

MC: Cam’ron
Selected Catalog: Confessions of Fire (1998), S.D.E. (2000), *Come Home With Me (2002), *#Diplomatic Immunity (2003), *Purple Haze (2004), #Diplomatic Immunity, Vol. 2 (2004).
# = with the Diplomats
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: Have you ever gone to a show and seen Diplomat fans in action? It’s almost like Cam is the epicenter of a cult following. Killa, Juelz Santana and Jim Jones are probably the biggest thing going in their NYC hometown when it comes to 'hood music, proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that you don’t have to be multiplatinum “TRL” darlings to be a true rap stars. Cam himself is entertainment personified, whether it be his outlandish interview quotes, even crazier rap sentences or his swaggering outfits.

Forecast: Since Cam reintroduced himself in 2002 with the Roc, he’s had one consistent formula: To shun high-priced but proven producers in favor of unknown track masters with a gritty sound, which has helped him keep the streets on smash. In the future, he may chase a few more million sales and rap over more commercial beats — which is fine, as long he keeps up his wordplay.

MC: Talib Kweli
Selected Catalog: *#Black Star (1998), ~Reflection Eternal (2000), Quality (2002), The Beautiful Struggle (2004).
# = as a member of Black Star
~ = as a member of Reflection Eternal
* = undeniable classic

Analysis: He’s conscious but fly and gets ridiculously busy. Talib’s catalog has been deemed respect-worthy for years by his peers and the backpack hip-hop fans. With a little spotlighting by Dave Chappelle, Talib’s profile has gone up a couple of notches in recent years.

Forecast: Talib is literally one or two hits away from rising above his underground status and capturing the attention of the masses. That, coupled with a little more media savvy, and there’s no reason why he couldn’t dine with the greats.
