Oblivion kind of counts towards last year...its confusing because so many diff. sites offer a different range of eligible candidates depending on release dates and when they will announce winners. When does ign make the cutoff for candidates for the 2006 awards?

Maybe in number of exclusives, but quality? I doubt it as not enough has been shown for many of its biggest exclusives. Plus, you can’t argue with
a list like this:
Mass Effect
Too Human
Bioshock
Halo 3
Gears of War
Ninja Gaiden 2
Fable 2
Forza 2
Huxley
...well you’ve heard them all before, so I won’t waste any more time listing them.

Um Dude RE4 came out in January of 05 and one Game of the Year 2005 so it’s January 1 is the beginning and cutoff.

You know how these things go, Itagaki has confirmed it unofficially and it is listed on ign’s release date list for TBA 2007. It’s really only a matter of time before they officially announce it as he stated that development would commence after the release of DOA4 and along side DOAX2.
