what shits me most about aethiests is that they still celebrate christmas and easter. im not a jew so i dont celebrate hannukah. so why should you celebrate the birth and resurrection of christ if you don’t beleive in him?
I celebrate Christmas, not Easter though because it sucks. Basically the only two two reasons I celebrate it are because the rest of my family are Christian, and the presents. I don’t see any importance in a “birth or ressurection of Christ” because I don’t believe he exists. There is actually prety strong evidence that supports that but I don’t want to be accused of discrimination again.

Well, christmas was celebrated before the christians took it over, it was called Saturnalia, where people made and exchanged presents, ate, drank, and were merry, and even cut down evergreens and decorated them to honor Saturn. Celebrated from december 17 to the 23.

And there is enough evidence to prove he exists. It’s basicly just what you want to believe.

Ah yes but you DO realize that both Christmas and Easter were originally pagan holidays? The Christians took over the time of the original holiday, continued to use a lot of the symbols and meanings, but then added their own beliefs. So it really isn’t valid to say who has a right to celebrate those holidays

Yeah and for Easter the Babylonians believed there god hatched out of an egg. And they killed children and that is why we search for eggs.

Well Aaron, I believe you’re referring to the Babylonian fertility goddess Ishtar. I have seen some references to her hatching out of an egg, although I’m having difficulties finding a reliable source (anyone else got anything?)
There is also an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess Eostre (there are alternate spellings) and another name is Ostara - but it is debated whether the origin of that spelling is Anglo-Saxon or German.
However, I hightly doubt that “killing children” had anything to do with a celebration of fertility The egg is a symbol of fertility and as such was important in the celebration of fertility.
Interestingly enough, I came across a lot of sources that argue that Christians shouldn’t celebrate Easter for this reason....kind of humorous when you consider that heids said only Christians should celebrate the holiday.

ah so true , at least someone else TOO believes , or seems like , religions are a mere extensions of cultural beliefs and social rituals , .. all mashed up and whipped into a bizzarre tale... im not anti religion though cuz thats one thing thats kept mankind from going insane.
