GOW is in no way better than Halo. And Halo I think it is a great series but not amazing and legendary aside from the online which really is quite good. So I’m sure that GOW can’t even touch Halo 2 on online and if that’s it’s best feature then it’s already worse.
But Gears gives a new setup in a sci fi shooter. Yet really doesn’t seem to come out as all that amazing. It seems to me just another spoof off the sci fi world when it comes to setting up the world, envirorment, and charcters, ect. You know there are not that many games that really do try to be unique when it comes to sci fi shooters. Halo was not amazingly unique to the sci fi world yet did give more than most gave.
Gears on the other hand did not. Gave similar things such as weapons, setting, and creatures.
Above all the lack of originality it still did have some good core gameplay. The controls take a little while to get used to but overall good. (But took a lot longer to me cause any shooter after playing on the Wii feels awkward haha). The cover system was very creative and quite good. A few of the weapons were unique such as the chainsaw and the grenades but nothing much else really.
I do enjoy a few of the enemis such as the Berzerk but the regular locust army and the main locust dude really doesn’t seem new. The highlight of the game most seem to rag on is the graphics. Which I’m sure on an HDTV look a lot better than what I’m seeing but on a regular SDTV not much different. I mean I still say this but nothing is surprisingly better or beats RE4 on the GC by that much. It just hasn’t been done. But I must say the one advantage I have seen in Gears is the lighting which in all next gen games seems to be the advantage.
So with all that I’d say gears is a great game. NOt Amazing or better than Halo but a stable shooter. It outdoes some other shooters which apsolutely lacked any kinda innovation, creativty, originality in anything such as Prey. The only major rag I ever had on the game is the physics and blood effects. I guess Epic did on purpose to overexaggerate the blood. Otherwise it’s really really bad and sometimes just annoying. The physics I guess are also overdone and overexaggerated with the destruction of bodies. Personally I guess it gives the game a more gruesome and “mature” look but too me it’s annoying, kinda disgusting, and really just takes away from the action.
But yea overall I’d give the game an 8.5.
