Tv shows are like long movies and can carry a storyline over a long period. Take Stargate sg1. Stargate was a movie, which then evolved into said tv show series. Both are good in their own right.
Scrubs is an excellent show, but would have a hard time being made into a movie, due to the concept.
Superman. Its tv series counterpart is Smallvile.
While the movies are Awesome in their own right, the superman legend has a lot of back story which would be hard to cover in say 2 hours.
many T.V series are being made into movies and vise versa.
The simpsons, one of tv’s longest running animated series is finaly becoming a movie and Starwars is becoming a Tv series.
The merits of each one are dependant on the target audiance and the viewing public.
Movies generaly have more special effects and a bigger budget and are best suited for a specific event or story.
Tv shows are rather suited for prolonged stories which rely on the viewers interest rather than big budget special effects to carry the characters and your attention.
Some movies should not become tv shows(Neverending story-which relied on big special effects to capture our imagination) and some tv shows should not become movies(Yu-Gi-OH- which had a plot so thin for the movie, it was transparent).
I say each has its place in the media and to draw a decision on which is better, would be like comparing a ball to a frizbee. both are toys, but each serves a different purpose.
I say each has its own merits and are equal in their own rights.
