Your body has two types of muscle fibers.

Fast twitch and slow twitch fibers.
Fast twitc fibers are utilised for explosive power and suit sports such as weight lifting and sprinting, where as slow twitch fibers suit aerobic activity such as marathon running.

Due to the training involved in aereobic activity, the body burns more fat and lean muscle tissue, than what weight lifting does. it also does not build as much muscle mass as weightlifting, hence the streamlined look of most marathon runners.

Weight lifting, which causes damage to the muscle fibers, causes the muscle to repair itself, and in doing so increases the muscle mass of the damaged muscle to decrease the chances of re occuring injury. hence the reason, weigh lifters BULK UP..

Both athletes are burning the same amount of fat over time, with the main difference that the weight lifter is also getting bigger, due to the constant overload on his muscular structure and the bodies repair reflex.

An athletes muscle mass does not always determine a winning performance. A bulked up weight lifter will win a sprint over a skinny guy or vise versa, DEPENDING ON WHO HAS MORE FAST TWITCH MUSCLE FIBERS.

Muscle mass is secondary to the type of muscle fibers you have dominant in your body.

Also, a person can get stronger without gaining and extra muscle by load training. that is where you pick a weight lifting exersise, say bench press. you load the bar with as much weight that will only allow you lift the bar 3 times till complete exhaustion. you do 3 reps and only 1 set. then you walk away. wait 1 day then do it again. each time you think you can squeeze another one out, EG do four instead of 3..DONT. just do the 3 and next time increase the weight.

This strengthens the muscle fibers without damaging them. you will notice huge gains in strength without any gain in mass. this is a trick used by professional fighters, weightlifters ect who wish to get stronger but not go up in a class size. eg stay a welter weight.

Ive done this with my shoulders and arms for years and now, im sure with the right knuckle protection, i could punch through a brick wall. it works!, yet i can still touch my shoulder..just which is the same as i could do 2 years ago.

Oh and arm wrestling is all in the wrists. if you have strong wrist flexors, you can win almost any arm wrestling comp you enter. to build up strength, squeeze a hard stress ball with your palm facing up. also with your palm facing up, grasp a medium to heavy dumbell and curl your wrist up and down again. dont go to fast. control the movement. you can also build up your forearms by keeping your wrist curled towards you when you do bicep curls.

no thts wrong, for sports like basketball, and soccer, those fast twitch muscles aren’t going to help you kick harder or jump higher

Thank you James.
DestinyGuy678, the fast twitch muscle fibers are used by your body WHEN EVER explosive power is needed, such as KICKING A BALL HARD, JUMPING OFF THE GROUND, throwing a punch, Hurling a baseball or anything that requirs some form of rapid movement which uses anerobic energy or ATP( Adenosine Tri Phosphate). Slow twitch muscle fibers use Oxygen to generate energy, hence the reason you huff and puff when jogging or power walking for long distances. the fast twitch muscle fibers become exhausted and the slow twitch fibers take over.

A bi product of Atp conversion is lactic acid, which is what the burning is in your muscles after you over exert them. Oxygen breaks down the lactic acid, hence the reason you dont get as much burning from fast walking as you do from weights or other anerobic activity.

as a tip. next time your muscles are burning from to much exertion, take a few deep breaths. it will help the burning stop quicker.smiley

Its ba common misconception that weight lifting just turns you into this mountain of muscle. All the realy bulky guys you see take their lifting to the next level. it realy is quite difficult to get to that stage in weights. you can do enduro lifting with weights which actualy tones you up rather the bulk you up...(THINK BRUCE LEE) Weights should be a integral part of any excercise regime, even if it is low weight, high rep endurance training. It is proven that lifting weights properly, improves heart health, boosts circulation, increases stability and bone strength and reduces fat overall in the body. the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn off in day to day activities.

How you look with any percentage of muscle mass is also dependent on your body shape. there are 3 types, each effecting how well you put on and lose weight and muscle mass.

first up are the ectomorphs, these guys are like bruce lee, naturally thin and slender and almost never get fat. its also very hard for them to gain any conciderable muscle mass. PRIME EXAMPLEblushRUCE LEE.

Next we have the Mesomorphs. These guys look like every jock you see, broard shoulders, ripped abs ect..you get the picture. These people gain and lose fat fairly easily and can bulk up to comic book superhero proportions PRIME EXAMPLE: EARLY ARNOLD SWARZENEGGER.

Lastly we have the Endomorphs. These guys, Mariomaniac, are the ones you are refering to. You know, the barrel guys, Hard, Round and Stumpy. They gain fat very, very easily, however, they have the potential to get HUGE, like lift a truck huge. PRIME EXAMPLE:ANY BOUNCER AT A PUB OR TOUGHMAN LOGGING CHAMPION.

hope this clears a few things up.smiley

1) There’s a big difference between weight lifting and body building

2) Where the hell did you get that lifting weights makes your arms stubby?
