well my operation was also 23 years ago, and my metal rod is not the same as yours either its just a streight rod that is tied to my spine,,,,wait a min it was 24 years ago

You can bend later, but not like you used to. It may not be that you shouldn’t as much as you may not be able to. The alloy they use, at least as the doctor explained, becomes more malleable as time goes on, to a certain degree anyway.

Well, they were only so useful, my feet...Helped get the shower started every morning, but when you have multi/minicore myopathy, you can’t use your legs so well. Heh, I feel kinda jealous.
But, in about a year, you’ll probably be back to usual activity. I recommend finding simple exercises (not yet though) to help strengthen back muscles. It should help, but wait until the doctor says you can do that stuff again.
Shriner’s is a great place, but its kinda hidden. Its a hospital for disadvantaged financially, but they also have some great doctors. There was a story from them where they fixed a Russian girl with scoliosis that was in the 100’s...
