Right, on with deconstructing your post. Firstly, yes, he’s faster than most Nu-metal drummers. Nu-metal is fucking dead. Deader than DVDA’s sex life. No-one listens to Nu-metal, because it’s a hideous, flash in the pan genre.
Yeah, anyway. He might be fast for a Nu-metal drummer, but like I’ve pointed out plenty of times; he’s nowhere near the fastet drummer around.
Secondly, speed has absolutely nothing to do with musicality and ability. Obviously, speed is generally a good thing in the metal world. But there are millions of moronic drummers out there that can blast beat at 240+, without a shred of musicality. Half of them don’t know what finesse or dynamics means. Do you, DVDA?
Joey’s style? The man severely lacks style, although I’ll give it to you that you could pick out his drumming from a mile off. It’s sloppy and tasteless.The guy two-foots his blast beats. He doesn’t play at anything approaching the speeds of some technical death metal drummers, but still has to two-foot his blasts, a technique generally frowned upon by the pros. Aww, poor Joey can’t keep up the pace. Not that blast beats are in any way musical or challenging.
His 'crazy drum solos' are a gimmick. Drum solos are dissected by drummers like me to find out what’s going on in them, more specifically, what techniques he’s using. Joey’s tasteless, dull solos are full of double kick and double strokes. That’s about it. Fine, it sounds fast, but that’s double strokes for you. And it’s nothing on Flo Mounier, Derek Roddy, countless others.
So we can see that, Joey has speed, but not amazing speed. He’s got poor technique, endorses crappy drums like the corporate prostitute he is (kids like DVDA are the first ones to blindly yell 'sell out', when they are blissfully unaware of their own band’s whore-mongery). He lacks dynamics, technicality, has probably never played a rhythm out of 4/4 time in his life.
He’s unversatile; he only plays metal. The session drummers that are so in demand behind the scenes have to play anything that’s thrown at them, with all of 10 minutes notice. Derek Roddy and Flo Mounier, of Hate Eternal and Cryptopsy, respectively, are both jazz trained and fully capable. Martin Lopez of Opeth (ex) is jazz and latin trained, and my god, the guy has an amazing grip on dynamics.
So there we go, Joey can’t touch so many drummers out there. So please, let’s have no more of people ignorantly and blindly accusing the guy of being 'teh best in teh worldz00rz', just because another 15 year old moron told you so.
