First: Any suggestions for me of the two genres?
Second: Is Job For A Cowboy Death metal or black metal? It contains both characteristics.

Anyway, Black wise, you NEED to check out Emperor at the very least, plus; Agalloch, Burzum, Enslaved, Mayhem, Ihsahn’s solo album, Celtic Frost’s early work, Ulver.
As far as death goes, there’s so many sub genres it gets a bit silly.
Brutal Death Metal - Suffocation, Disgourge, Nile
Technical Death Metal - Cryptopsy (the most extreme band. Period.) and The Faceless both rock socks. Necrophagist and Meshuggah are both pretty intense. Decapitated are insane for how old they are. Nile are insane.
'Classic' Death Metal - Cynic, Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel
Gore Metal - Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy
Doom/Death - Disembowelment, early Paradise Lost
Blackened Death Metal - Ackercocke, Zyklon, Deicide, Hypocrisy, Behemoth
Progressive Death Metal - Opeth, Ackercocke, Cynic, Death, Nocturnus, Atheist

Either way, I recommend Opeth’s albums Damnation, Deliverance and Blackwater Park. They’re all easy to get into (Deliverence less so, Damnation more so) and they contain suitable amounts of metal and non-metal bits.
It’s kind of sheer beauty mixed with utter brutality. It’s astonishing music and should steer you towards decent metal, as opposed to something shitty like A7X or Slipknot.

Once you start listening, heavy doesnt really apply anymore. But technical death is the most noisy, that’s for sure.

Death Metal still is amazing. Death is definately angrier, but does not quite carry the same emotions seen in Black Metal in my opinion.

They arent black metal. They’ve even professed that they only use the aesthetics.

I would think black metal. The underground black metal bands are extremely heavy.
