If it’s not then why would you ever play the game. You don’t play a game that’s boring or slow or uninvolved.
Plus I think sound is important. After Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out sound just really became something mediocre games and made it a main factor. Sound has to be on.

Wind Waker was never considered in the stereotypical terms of good graphics. But I loved it’s art style. I love games that don’t just make that gritty realistic look cause we are all tired of it. It’s old news. I like games that make up their own kinda art style. Games like Zelda, Killer 7, and most recently Okami. Okami deserved every graphics award out there not Gears of War. It’s style was just apsolutely amazing.

What people didn’t like was the cel-shaded style until it was released.

But you forgot something. There were also less people who owned any kind of game console back then. Since gaming was so new not everyone was into it. When video games came out it was considered to be only for nerds. Now compare that to today’s gaming world. Today we have casual gamers, hardcore gamers, fanboys, female gamers, child gamers, even parent and grandparents play video games today. Back then only nerds played video games and only they bought the games, yet games from that time still outsell games of today which are considered to be photo-realistic. What developers need to do today is put more effort into gameplay like in the olden days. If you want a game to sell don’t put graphics far ahead of gameplay, because no matter how good a game looks it can still suck ass.
