Just don’t sever any wires. And make sure you don’t have two HDs each with operating systems. I don’t know if anything bad would happen, but I wouldn’t risk it.

On the back of the Drive (usually next to where you plug either the power cord or the IDE ribbon in) there should be a bunch of little metal things sticking out.
One of those should say “Slave” another “master”, And there’s probably another that says “Cable Select”. all you have to do is put a jumper shunt on the Combination of pins to set it for either Master or slave. I can’t tell you which combination is for which because all drives are different. But it should say there somewhere. Just make sure one of the drives is master and another is slave if You’re gonna have two drives.
And I know the picture is a picture of a hard drive but its the same exact thing for a CD drive.

of course, As long as you do the same exact thing you would do for the CD drives. One Master and One slave. And You have to Be super sure that the HD that has all Your stuff on it, You know Windows all your saved data, Is the Master Drive. And it also depends on how many hard drive/CD Drive plugs your Power Supply has.
